Seongsu-dong lamb skewers with a baby and Tsingtao: Hwaro Yangmi

In short

Hwaro Yangmi is a lamb skewer restaurant in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, a 3–4 minute walk from Ttukseom Station. After a morning outdoors with a 17-month-old, the writer ordered two servings of lamb skewers (17,000 won each) and a bottle of Tsingtao (8,000 won), and the staff grilled the young lamb skewers at the table as a free service. With a high chair, stroller access and doors open from 10:30 a.m., Hwaro Yangmi is an easy place for a daytime beer with a child along.

Toddling along, step by step ๑◕‿‿◕๑

After four hours of outdoor play with my kid, we stopped by Hwaro Yangmi, a lamb skewer restaurant in Seongsu-dong. It's a 3–4 minute walk from Ttukseom Station, and they've got a free grilling service, which makes it easy to bring a kid along. Today we went all in — lamb skewers plus a daytime Tsingtao.

Seoul Forest's Bangatgan is a regular stop on our daily routine in Seongsu-dong. This morning Hajun played at the playground with a neighborhood friend for over an hour, and then it was lunch time at Hwaro Yangmi, a Seongsu-dong lamb skewer place! At 17 months old, Hajun eats lamb skewers and lamb ribs really well. Today happened to be a Thursday afternoon when I was craving lamb skewers paired with Tsingtao, so off we went.

Hwaro Yangmi is about a 3-minute walk from Ttukseom Station. Even if you plan to head over to Seoul Forest afterward, the route is easy. Best of all, this place opens at 10:30am and offers a free grilling service where staff cook the lamb for you.

What we ordered: two servings of lamb skewers and a Tsingtao

Hwaro Yangmi in Seongsu-dong is a spacious restaurant with group seating, so it works fine for Seongsu-dong work dinners too. We'd made a Naver reservation ahead of time, so our table was already set up when we arrived.

  • Lamb skewers, 1 serving ₩17,000 x2
  • Tsingtao bottle, 1 bottle ₩8,000

Each serving of lamb skewers comes with 8 skewers, so ordering two servings gave us 16 skewers total. Since it's young lamb, the meat is on the tender side.

Why Hwaro Yangmi's free grilling service helps when you have a baby

The biggest perk of Hwaro Yangmi, a restaurant near Ttukseom Station, is the free grilling service. Honestly, having a restaurant grill for you while you're out with a baby is such a relief. While the expert grills, I get to take care of my kid — two birds, one stone.

The four seasoning sauces, and the pickled shiitake mushroom

They also bring out a generous spread of side dishes to go with the lamb. The highlight here is the four seasoning sauces: wasabi, cumin seasoning (zhiran), whole grain mustard, and pickled shiitake mushroom. I'd read in other reviews that the pickled shiitake mushroom was good, and after trying it — absolutely delicious! Of the four sauces, my chopsticks kept reaching for the shiitake the most.

Why lamb skewers and a daytime Tsingtao go so well together

There's a reason lamb skewers and Tsingtao are such a good match. Tsingtao seems to have a noticeably higher alcohol content than Korean beer, and that pairs well with meat — kind of like the feeling of drinking somaek (soju-beer mix)? Plus the beer itself has a clean taste with a nice finish. It's ₩8,000 a bottle, but since this was a rare lamb skewer day, I went for the daytime beer.

How much a 17-month-old and one adult ate, and how the lamb tasted

Two servings, about 16 skewers, was plenty for me and my 17-month-old. Lamb is a meat that's good for the body, so I can feed it to my kid without worry, and since it's charcoal-grilled, both adults and kids give charcoal-grilled lamb a thumbs up.

Eating it with the four seasoning sauces at Hwaro Yangmi in Seongsu-dong made it even more special. I'd only ever dipped skewers in the zhiran seasoning before this. This place is also run by genuinely Chinese staff, so you can enjoy authentic mainland Chinese-style food here too. The lamb skewers at Hwaro Yangmi have a strong, distinct lamb flavor — so if you're someone who really enjoys the taste of lamb itself, this will especially suit your palate.

When I cut the lamb into small pieces with scissors, the baby eats it like finger food. After being outside from 8am to noon, of course he was going to eat well, haha.

Once the baby was mostly taken care of, I took a few sips myself. At the table next to us, two women were each going through their own bottle of soju. Haha, having fellow daytime drinkers nearby made me silently cheer, 'cheers!' Now that I'm a mom, there's hardly ever a chance to drink, so getting even one glass in the daytime like this on an outing really feels healing.

My spouse called on video, so it ended up being the three of us sharing the table, sort of.

My son, who was swinging the lamb skewer sticks around, treats every utensil — scissors, tongs, all of it — like a toy. Still, he fed me a peanut and a piece of lamb with his own hands, so it's for moments like these that I keep going strong.
