In short

Aemo Kkotgejang Apgujeong Main Branch is a marinated crab (kkotgejang) restaurant on Nonhyeon-ro 152-gil near Apgujeong Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Eating alone, the writer ordered one serving of the mild marinated crab for 26,000 won plus the 1,000 won rice bowl, and the savory silbi kimchi marinade paired with that cheap bowl of rice was the highlight. Aemo Kkotgejang works even for solo diners who cannot handle spicy food.

Why Aemo Kkotgejang for a solo crab meal near Apgujeong Station?

Aemo Kkotgejang Apgujeong Main Branch is a marinated crab (kkotgejang) restaurant on Nonhyeon-ro 152-gil near Apgujeong Station, and it's a place where you can order just a single serving on your own. I'd been craving crab for days and kept googling where to go, and since I had errands near Apgujeong Station, I decided to handle dinner there too and finally visit the place I'd been curious about.

Crab dishes tend to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of menu, so I went without high expectations, but it turned out to be way more satisfying than I thought. I was curious about their signature spicy marinated crab, which apparently gets its heat purely from capsaicin with no artificial seasoning. I was a bit worried since it's said to be the spiciest in the country, but since it's famous in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, I decided to give it a try.

Walking in, the interior was clean. On the side wall, there were a lot of celebrity autographs hanging up.

Inside Aemo Kkotgejang, the table spacing was wide and there were partitions, so I could eat comfortably without worrying about the next table. There are also private rooms, so it's a decent spot for group dinners too. The menu is broadly split into three: spicy marinated crab, mild marinated crab, and soy-marinated crab.

I already knew the spicy version was said to be the spiciest in the country. It's spicier than silbi (a well-known reference point for heat), so I'd only recommend it to people who can really handle spice. If you can't handle spice well, I'd recommend going with the mild version instead. Even the mild one definitely keeps that spicy-savory kick, so it's not bland at all. The soy-marinated crab apparently goes through a second round of aging to tame the saltiness and fishiness, and that part genuinely impressed me. I was on my own so I only ordered one serving, but next time I want to try the other menu items too.

The side dishes were solid too. It felt like they'd put thought into the pairing since the marinated crab is spicy. Tuna salad, seaweed soup, quail eggs — more variety than other crab restaurants I've been to.

Mild marinated crab: how spicy is it really?

Since I can't handle spicy food, I ordered the mild marinated crab at Aemo Kkotgejang.

It first comes out whole like this, but if you ask the staff, they'll cut it into smaller pieces for you, which makes it much easier to eat.

The first bite hits with a spicy kick, but the savory depth left behind by the silbi kimchi kept my chopsticks going back for more. I think that silbi kimchi is what really sets this place apart from other crab restaurants — it boosts the umami so much. I'm not someone who can't handle spice at all, more of an average eater, and the spice level felt just right. That said, it wasn't bland either — the spicy-sweet balance was well tuned. The crab meat was also generously packed, so it was fun to pick apart too.

The 1,000 won rice bowl and grilled cabbage wraps

I ordered the daejeopbap (rice bowl). It comes with flying fish roe, seaweed flakes, and sesame oil, yet it's priced the same as a plain bowl of rice at just ₩1,000.

I picked the crab meat off and mixed it into the rice bowl, and it was genuinely delicious. Wrapping it in grilled cabbage makes a crab wrap you won't find anywhere else. Prices were ₩26,000 for the spicy marinated crab, ₩26,000 for the mild marinated crab, and ₩48,000 for the soy-marinated crab. Takeout and nationwide delivery are both available, so if you can't visit in person, I'd recommend ordering delivery. There are more items on the menu too, so it's worth checking it out in person.

Is Aemo Kkotgejang's crab-packed kkotgejang worth a second visit?

Aemo Kkotgejang Apgujeong Main Branch is a place worth visiting at least once if you like crab. Personally, the distinctive marinade made with silbi kimchi is what stuck with me. The owner and staff were also incredibly kind, which left an impression — the fact that they thoughtfully stock mouthwash, hair ties, dental floss, and candy is proof of that.

Also, for the first week after opening, the first 20 walk-in customers each day get a premium large tumbler for free, so I'd recommend going soon if that's still running. I plan to visit again myself if I get the chance.
