I visited Dongyang Sotbap Ansan Main Branch with my parents while looking for somewhere to eat over the weekend.

Dongyang Sotbap Ansan Main Branch visited with my parents

Since I was dining with my parents, I wanted somewhere we could have a proper meal without anything overly intense. I already love pot rice, and it was easy to get to from Jungang-dong, so that is how we chose it.

Pot-rice restaurant with easy access from Jungang-dong

When we got there, perhaps because it was the weekend, there was such a varied crowd—from younger diners to families visiting with their parents. The modern, tidy interior and neatly presented food made this Ansan Jungang-dong restaurant a great first impression.

A tidy pot-rice restaurant easy to find in Jungang-dong

Dongyang Sotbap Ansan Main Branch is on the second floor of Hae-nam Building in the heart of Jungang-dong’s commercial district. You take the stairs rather than an elevator to the second floor, and it is in such an easy-to-find spot that access is great!

There were lots of visitors on the weekend, so we waited before being seated. You could tell it was already a popular spot, with not just young couples but plenty of families like ours dining with their parents.

Takeout is available too, so it would be nice to enjoy it that way on days when dining in is difficult.

The open kitchen and how well the restaurant is kept

One thing we liked at Dongyang Sotbap Ansan Main Branch was how well the restaurant was maintained.

Clean, well-maintained interior at Dongyang Sotbap

The interior itself was very clean, so I felt no hesitation about bringing my parents. The kitchen is slightly open, letting us see food being prepared, and I got the sense that not only the visible areas but the kitchen as well were kept clean overall.

It is said to have a very excellent hygiene rating, and it is a certified business where you can drink the water with confidence!

In fact, after trying the water, we kept saying it was somehow delicious and I think each of us drank two extra cups.

Restaurant food-allergy information

There was also information about food allergies, and I appreciated that they paid attention even to such thoughtful details.

A Korean meal set that is great with parents

As its name suggests, Dongyang Sotbap serves Korean dishes centered on sotbap (pot rice).

Korean menu centered on pot rice

There is a wide range of menu items, and as a Korean-food franchise brand, it apparently has branches in various regions and has expanded overseas too.

That made me think it would be nice to find and visit a branch near you, too.

✨ Ondo pick ✨ Freshwater eel special / aged-kimchi pork belly pot rice / Dongyang eggplant pot rice / pork neck pot rice

The freshwater eel special, limited to 10 per day

First out was the freshwater eel special.

Freshwater eel special limited to 10 per day

There was a generous layer of tenderly cooked eel over the pot rice, with egg, ginger, gim (roasted seaweed), and wasabi to enjoy alongside it. I tried a big spoonful with a piece of eel, rice, egg, seaweed, and wasabi, and it was so tender.

A spoonful of eel, rice, and accompaniments

The eel was not tough at all; it seemed to melt away in the mouth, so my parents enjoyed it too.

Tender eel pot-rice set

The eel was tasty on its own, but having it with the pot rice and all the accompaniments made the combination even more abundant.

Korean aged kimchi and pork belly pot rice

Next was the aged-kimchi pork belly pot rice—the one I wanted to come back for next time.

Korean aged-kimchi pork belly pot rice

First of all, the Korean aged kimchi was really delicious. The pork belly also had a nice balance of fat and lean meat, and the quality of the meat itself was good. Topped with aged kimchi, tofu, and finely chopped scallions, it became a familiar yet delicious Korean meal set. Pork belly and aged kimchi are tasty even on their own, but together with the pot rice, miyeok-guk (seaweed soup), and basic side dishes—so good! The aged kimchi was especially delicious, and we kept saying while eating that we should come back for it.

Dongyang eggplant pot rice—even eggplant skeptics could enjoy it

Then there was the Dongyang eggplant pot rice, which I had been curious about.

Dongyang eggplant pot rice arranged like flower petals

Eggplant can be a love-it-or-hate-it ingredient, but it looked far prettier than I expected from the start. The eggplant was arranged neatly like flower petals, making even this pot rice beautifully plated. Its characteristic soft texture and moist flavor came through, and there was meat crumble on the side. The meat crumble had a savory saltiness, and taking a generous spoonful of eggplant and rice together was such a good combination.

It had a flavor that even children who do not usually eat eggplant because of its texture could enjoy without feeling burdened!

A simply satisfying classic pork neck pot rice

Last was the pork neck pot rice.

Pork neck pot rice chosen in the classic flavor

You can choose spicy or mild pork neck pot rice, but since we were eating with my parents, we went with the classic version! The plump pieces of pork neck paired well with the pot rice, and there was more meat than I expected. The meat also had a subtle smoky char, making it much more flavorful than rice alone. Overall, it was not heavily seasoned; it was more a style where the meat and rice naturally came together when eaten as one.

Refillable side dishes and scorched rice

The basic side dishes served with the pot rice were not merely minor accompaniments either. We had pickled sides, salted squid, and stir-fried nuts, and all three were good. Personally, they suited my taste so well that I thought they would be delicious even if sold separately at a banchan (side-dish) shop. You can refill the side dishes, and use the self-service corner to add as much as you need!

Looking at the country of origin information, I was even more satisfied to see quite a lot of Korean ingredients. After eating the pot rice, nurungji (scorched rice) naturally forms at the bottom. It was not the sort that felt stuck too firmly to the pot and hard to scrape off, so you could happily scrape every last bit from the bottom according to your preference.

Self-service nurungji corner with hot water

You can enjoy nurungji separately at the self-service corner, where hot water is also provided, so you can make it however you like.

The value we felt at a family meal

Considering the portions and composition of everything we tried, along with the quality of the food, I thought it was a Korean restaurant with good value for money overall.

A varied Korean pot-rice meal set

When dining out with parents, you consider not only the food but also the atmosphere, hygiene, and menu selection. Dongyang Sotbap Ansan Main Branch had a clean restaurant, neatly prepared Korean dishes, and many kinds of pot rice, making it a good choice for a family meal.

They also prepare a birthday table free of charge for the person celebrating a birthday, so that is worth keeping in mind if you are planning a birthday meal.

A restaurant to visit with parents in Ansan Jungang-dong

This time I visited with my parents, and it was even better because we could share four different menu items.

More than anything, the restaurant was clean and modern in style, making it good for bringing parents, and I could see why there were so many family diners on the weekend.
