Aged pork belly, makchang and doenjang sulbap: Neolpanji, Pohang

In short

Neolpanji Pohang Yeongildae Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant one minute on foot from Yeongildae Beach in Pohang. The visit started with two servings each of aged pork belly and pre-grilled makchang (grilled beef intestines), then filled out with doenjang sulbap (rice cooked in fermented soybean paste soup), honeycomb tripe and gochujang stew. Signature dishes start in the low ₩10,000s, which is great value for a beach tourist spot.

Meat on the grill at Neolpanji Pohang Yeongildae Branch

Today's a review of a Pohang Yeongildae favorite — a Korean BBQ spot. While I was at Yeongildae in Pohang, I stopped by a genuine hotspot pork belly restaurant that's already loved by a lot of people.

That's 'Neolpanji Pohang Yeongildae Branch,' just a minute's walk from Yeongildae Beach! The quality of the aged pork belly was so good, I really enjoyed it.

The makchang (grilled beef intestines) was so savory too. And with the great value, I'd highly recommend it.

It's a BBQ place in Yeongildae, but it also has hearty side dishes good for a full meal, so I ended up having a really filling dinner. Let's get into the review.

You can park at the Yeongildae public parking lot. It's about a 6-minute walk from there, which felt totally fine.

Menu and prices: what we ordered

The signature menu items are pre-grilled makchang, flash-frozen pork belly, and aged pork belly, all priced at ₩10,900! It's 100% real Korean pork, and considering this is a tourist area, the price is really reasonable. Honeycomb tripe is ₩6,900 as a side.

We started with two servings of makchang and two servings of aged pork belly.

Inside the restaurant: interior and atmosphere

Even though it was a weekday evening, the restaurant was already nearly full.

View of the tables and seating inside the restaurant

On the walls inside, you can also see local baseball and soccer jerseys.

Overall it had a clean, bright vibe, which felt just right for good meat and a drink.

The basic table setting and side dishes

Basic table setting with lettuce wraps and side dishes

They set the table with the basic side dishes — lettuce wraps, shredded scallion salad, a special sauce, and other banchan (side dishes).

They also gave us bracken, bean sprouts, and potatoes to grill alongside the meat, plus mukeunji (aged kimchi), which pairs so well with pork belly.

How did the pre-grilled makchang and aged pork belly taste?

Pre-grilled makchang placed on the grill

We put the makchang on the grill first. Since it comes pre-grilled, it's easy to just lightly finish it off on the grill.

The sizzling sound as it cooked was so satisfying.

Makchang grilled to a golden brown

Once well cooked, dipped generously in makjang (seasoned dipping sauce), the makchang was absolute honey — savory, rich, and totally my type.

Aged pork belly grilling on the pan

The beautifully colored pork belly was grilled together with it too.

They run their own HACCP-certified meat processing factory, so you can eat premium domestic Korean pork (pork belly, ogyeopsal, makchang) for around ₩10,000-something per serving. Great value even for a tourist spot!

Sulbap: good as a drinking snack or a full meal

Since it seemed like it would go well with the meat, we also ordered sulbap (rice cooked in soup, often served with drinks).

Sulbap boiling in an earthenware pot

It came out boiling hot in a big earthenware pot, which I loved.

There's rice inside too, so it works great both as a drinking snack and a hearty meal.

Why it's worth making a reservation

Neolpanji, this Yeongildae favorite BBQ spot, can be booked through Catch Table. It's such a genuine hotspot that it fills up and creates waits even on weekday evenings. Since booking through Naver Reservation gets you a free doenjang sulbap, I'd recommend reserving that way when you visit!

Complimentary side dishes grilling alongside the meat
Grill with bean sprouts and bracken alongside the meat

These complimentary side dishes were so good grilled up and wrapped together with the makchang or pork belly.

A piece of pork belly dipped in the special sauce

The pork belly especially, dipped in the special sauce like this, exploded with savory umami flavor — so good.

Refillable bracken and namul side dishes

Just so you know, they do refill the bracken, aged kimchi, and other namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes if you ask.

Personally, the combo of makchang and pork belly was really satisfying.

The texture of the honeycomb tripe

Honeycomb tripe cooking on the grill

I was curious about the tripe too, so I ordered it. It cooks quickly on the well-heated grill, and cut into bite-sized pieces, it's wonderfully chewy. It felt like it must be full of collagen. Recommended!

Finishing with gochujang stew

It felt like something was missing to end things there, so we added a gochujang (red chili paste) stew at the end!

It was packed with meat, tofu, and other ingredients, so it too made for a hearty side dish, a great drinking companion, and a solid hangover cure.

Gochujang stew scooped onto a small plate

We scooped it into small plates and shared it happily. Thanks to Neolpanji, this Yeongildae favorite, we wrapped up our Yeongildae schedule really well.

Final thoughts

  • A Yeongildae favorite where both the makchang and the pork belly are delicious
  • A Yeongildae pork belly spot with great atmosphere and friendly service
  • A Yeongildae BBQ favorite — recommended for the 100% Korean pork belly

Highly recommend 'Neolpanji Pohang Yeongildae Branch.'
