Pohang seafood restaurant with raw shrimp sashimi: Oneuldo Gajami

In short

Oneuldo Gajami is a flounder mulhoe (raw fish in cold broth) and live-fish restaurant on the coastal road at Yeongildae in Pohang. On a late weekday evening the small raw shrimp sashimi cost 40,000 won for 16 shrimp, and the owner deep-fried the leftover shrimp heads as a soju snack. With indoor tables and outdoor yajang seating, Oneuldo Gajami works well for a late drink on a Pohang trip.

Today I visited Oneuldo Gajami, a mulhoe (raw fish in cold broth) restaurant in Pohang. Oneuldo Gajami specializes in flounder mulhoe and raw seafood, and they say the quality stays the same no matter the season. I was looking for a bar in Yeongildae to have a drink while traveling in Pohang, and since Oneuldo Gajami stays open late, I went straight there haha.

It's amazing that grilled flounder comes as a basic side dish. Freshly grilled and served warm, it was so tasty haha. The fish flesh was moist with no fishy smell at all, and it was seasoned just right — great to eat before the main sashimi arrives!

Raw shrimp sashimi, 16 shrimp: how to eat it

Here's the raw shrimp sashimi (small, ₩40,000) I ordered. The small size comes with 16 shrimp, and you can tell at a glance how fresh they are.

For reference, when eating, you snip off the shrimp head with scissors and eat just the body — but don't throw away the heads! Hand them to the owner and they'll fry them into shrimp head fritters haha.

Ha, you can't have this side dish without a drink. So I ordered a soju too.

I took a bite of the plump, fresh raw shrimp sashimi right away and wow, it's so good. Sweet and chewy with a great texture, really delicious. I've been obsessed with raw shrimp sashimi lately, and honestly once you fall for it there's no going back haha... It's a different charm from grilled or steamed prawns. If you like raw seafood, you have to try raw shrimp sashimi!

Personally, I recommend dipping it in wasabi and soy sauce to really enjoy the shrimp's own flavor! Dipping it well into soy sauce gives you that fresh ganjang-saeu (soy-marinated shrimp) feeling haha. The more you chew raw shrimp sashimi, the more that rich, sweet umami flavor unique to shrimp clings to your tongue — so good.

Fried shrimp heads from the leftovers

This is the fried shrimp heads, served crispy haha. The savory oil smell and shrimp aroma hit your nose, and the fried shrimp heads are crunchy yet savory — a total beer snack.

Peeling the shell off a fried shrimp head to eat

Personally, I recommend cutting off the top of the shrimp head and peeling off the shell before eating! It's much softer and tastier than eating it whole. These fried shrimp heads are so savory that I kept picking at them haha. Crispy like a cracker on the outside and rich inside — even though I was already full, I couldn't put my chopsticks down lol.

If you're traveling to Pohang and want fresh raw shrimp sashimi instead of just another ordinary raw fish restaurant, along with that full yajang mood and drinks late into the night, be sure to stop by Oneuldo Gajami at Yeongildae!
