Outdoor charcoal makchang date in Seo-gu, Daegu: Daraewon Makchang
In short
Daraewon Makchang Daegu Main Branch is a long-running makchang (grilled pork intestine) restaurant on Pyeongni-ro in Seo-gu, Daegu, with open-air seating on a gravel yard. On a cool evening the writer and her boyfriend ordered three servings of original raw makchang (12,000 won per 130g) plus two yangpuni bibimbap (bibimbap in a metal bowl) and doenjang jjigae, grilling everything over charcoal; the makchang, aged with pineapple and kiwi, was chewy with almost no gamey smell. Daraewon Makchang suits dates and group nights out when you want charcoal-grilled makchang with old-school street-tent atmosphere.

The heat is finally starting to break, and there's that cool morning-and-evening breeze these days..! Weather like this makes me want to be outside eating something delicious instead of stuck indoors, soaking up that little thrill in the air. So this time my boyfriend and I decided to get makchang somewhere with real old-school charm!

Today we visited Daraewon Makchang. With its gravel floor plus a street-tent-bar vibe, it was the perfect spot for weather like this. Here's my review of the date night I spent properly enjoying that outdoor tent atmosphere again after a while :)
Where is Daraewon Makchang, and is there parking?

Daraewon Makchang is located near the Nampyeongni intersection in Seo-gu, Daegu. It's about a 13-minute walk from Duryu Station on Daegu Subway Line 2, so it's fairly accessible even if you're relying on public transit!

For those driving, there's a parking area with room for about 3–4 cars.
How to book: group seating and Naver Reservation

You can book Daraewon Makchang by phone or through Naver Reservation. It has proper group seating too, so it looked like a good fit for larger parties — and apparently the wait can get pretty intense here!
The table spacing and overall atmosphere felt relaxed and comfortable, so it seemed well suited to friend gatherings, company dinners, or group meetups. And it's just as good for a low-key date like ours! If you book through Naver Reservation, they'll throw in a free spicy ramyeon or old-style red bean patbingsu — no reason not to do that, right?!
What the gravel-yard outdoor seating is like on a date

The first thing that caught my eye the moment we walked in was the thrilling outdoor tent atmosphere!! The floor is covered in gravel and the whole space is styled like a street food tent, so that old-school charm hit us the second we stepped in.

This time of year, when the evenings turn cool, that outdoor tent vibe is just so exciting...! It's a completely different feeling from a sleek, polished restaurant — honestly it felt even more comfortable. Great for a noisy, fun night with friends, and just as perfect for a couple grilling side by side on a cool evening!
Daraewon Makchang menu and prices
The menu had more variety than I expected. Mains include beef makchang, raw pork makchang, raw pork belly, pork neck, beef short rib meat, boneless spicy chicken feet, and hagfish, so you can pick based on your taste. With that much variety, it also looked easy to split orders across a bigger group.
Side dishes covered basically everything you'd need — mul naengmyeon (cold noodles), ramyeon, steamed egg, yangpuni bibimbap, and doenjang jjigae. We ordered three servings of the original raw makchang (₩12,000/130g), two yangpuni bibimbap (₩4,000), and one doenjang jjigae (₩2,000) :)
Honest review: three servings of original raw makchang

After ordering, they bring out the side dishes first — a clean, well-picked lineup made to go with makchang. Then the charcoal comes out, and that's when the excitement really kicks in~

They gave us rice cake, onion, and green onion to grill alongside, so we put them all on the grill together. Watching the makchang turn golden brown,, I thought I'd die of hunger,, meat grilled over charcoal is just impossible to resist.

The original raw makchang had a great chewy texture without being too tough. Dipping it in the makjang (seasoned dipping sauce) was perfect — the savory makchang and salty-sweet sauce were a match made in heaven! Some people worry about the gamey smell makchang can have, but this place ages theirs with fruit like pineapple and kiwi. I could barely taste any gaminess at all! Eating it alongside the grilled rice cake, onion, and green onion was great too.
While I was clumsily grilling away, a staff member kindly stepped in to help..! They cut everything into bite-sized pieces and kept checking in so nothing burned :)

We each ordered doenjang jjigae and yangpuni bibimbap too. As a Korean, you really can't skip the rice! Great to eat alongside everything else.
Who is Daraewon Makchang best for?
Overall, this felt less like a heavily styled restaurant and more like a place to properly enjoy charcoal-grilled makchang in a cozy, old-school setting. Now that the brutal summer heat is passing and the evening breeze is turning cool, eating outdoors in a tent-bar setting really is the best.
Especially with the gravel floor and tent-bar atmosphere working together, this is worth a visit if you're into that old-school charm! It's within walking distance of Duryu Station, so access is decent, and with group seating available it's also a solid choice for company dinners or gatherings :)
