50-year-old makchang tent restaurant in Seo-gu, Daegu: Daraewon
In short
Daraewon Makchang Daegu Main Branch is a 50-year-old grilled pork intestine (makchang) restaurant on Pyeongni-ro in Seo-gu, Daegu. A family dinner of three servings of raw pork makchang, boneless spicy chicken feet, and doenjang stew grilled under a tent over charcoal showed off makchang with no gamey smell, golden outside and juicy inside. It's the kind of place to visit when you want old-school pojangmacha atmosphere along with chewy, savory makchang.

If you love makchang (grilled pork intestine) in Daegu, there are days when you want the old-school atmosphere just as much as the food. I'm the type who thinks where you eat makchang matters almost as much as how it tastes. This time I went to Daraewon Makchang, a beloved old-school spot in Seo-gu that's been in the same location for a whopping 50 years. On a breezy day, watching the makchang sizzle under the tent set the mood perfectly. If you're hunting for a great Daegu makchang restaurant and also love that old-school pojangmacha feel, this kind of atmosphere will be a welcome sight.

Fifty years in the same spot — you can tell just from the atmosphere

Location and hours: an old-school makchang restaurant on Pyeongni-ro
Daraewon Makchang is located at 298 Pyeongni-ro, Seo-gu, Daegu, and is open daily from 4:30 PM to 12:30 AM the next day. It's near the Nampyeongni intersection, so it looked like a solid spot for nearby office workers to grab dinner after work, and it's also not far from E-World, making it a good choice for a family meal out. There was space in front of the restaurant for about 3 to 4 cars to park.
Street pojangmacha atmosphere under the tent
What I really loved was the atmosphere. Outside, it has that street-food vibe, and once you step inside, the distinct pojangmacha (street tent bar) feel is very much alive — the kind of old-school place people go out of their way to find these days. It was quite windy that day, and sitting under the tent grilling meat with the wind blowing made the makchang, which I've eaten plenty of times before, somehow taste even better. It really made me think that food only sticks in your memory when the place and the mood come together with it. The seating was also fairly generous, making it a good fit for family meals, work dinners, and even a slightly different kind of date spot. A neatly decorated restaurant is nice, but sometimes this kind of weathered, time-worn atmosphere at a great Daegu makchang restaurant is exactly what you're craving.

They pre-grill the makchang, so I was already in a good mood before it even arrived

Three servings of raw pork makchang, boneless chicken feet, and doenjang stew
My family ordered three servings of raw pork makchang and one serving of boneless spicy chicken feet. The side dishes came out neatly arranged and the vegetables were fresh, which put me in a good mood right from the start. The makchang looked to be in great condition, and watching it turn golden brown over the charcoal was genuinely mouthwatering. Once that sizzling sound starts, you can't help but get a little impatient. I took a bite of the golden-grilled makchang wrapped in pickled radish and lettuce — grilled over charcoal, with just the right amount of fat rendered off, it had a clean, savory flavor. Golden on the outside and juicy inside, I kept reaching for more. We also ordered doenjang stew (fermented soybean paste stew), which feels almost mandatory at a Korean BBQ restaurant. We got rice too and ate it alongside the stew, and I really loved that combination. Taking a bite of hot doenjang stew between bites of meat clears your palate and somehow makes room for more meat. Visiting a great Daegu makchang restaurant where both the makchang and the doenjang stew are delicious makes it easy to bring the whole family, even if everyone has different tastes.
One bite of the makchang and I understood why it's lasted 50 years

Fruit-aged makchang — how was the smell?
The three servings of raw pork makchang I'd been waiting for finally arrived. Daraewon Makchang says they carefully select fresh raw meat and age and brine it before serving. Since they use pineapple, kiwi, and other fruits for aging, I imagine anyone worried about the distinct gamey smell makchang can have would be interested to hear that. The pre-grilled makchang had already lost a good amount of fat, and rather than the usual off-putting smell, what came through first was a nutty aroma. Grilling it a bit more, golden on both sides on the grill plate, made it truly hard to resist. Dipping the well-cooked makchang into makjang (spicy dipping sauce) and taking a bite, the chewy texture and the nuttiness that built up with each chew were irresistible. We also grilled some green onion until it was nicely cooked and ate it with the makchang — the combination of the green onion's flavor with the makchang's savory juices worked really well together. My family likes makchang and eats it fairly regularly, and even the kids enjoyed it that day, so I felt good about the menu choice. Even at a great Daegu makchang restaurant, if the makchang itself isn't up to par, it's hard to want to come back — but Daraewon Makchang kept not just the food but the inside and outside of the restaurant clean, and the staff were friendly, so we finished the meal in a good mood. There's clearly a reason a restaurant lasts this long and stays this beloved.

What kind of day would bring you back here
It has a different charm from the flashy new restaurants, and it felt like you're enjoying the 50 years this place has spent in the same spot along with the food. Eating makchang full of charcoal aroma in that pojangmacha atmosphere on a breezy, cool day is a memory I think will stick with me for a while. If you've been searching for a great Daegu makchang restaurant, it might be nice to pair some golden-grilled makchang with a cold drink at Daraewon Makchang. This is a place that will come to mind whenever you want to enjoy old-school restaurant atmosphere together with chewy, savory makchang.
