Seomyeon braised ribs restaurant with Jeolla aged kimchi: Sinchon

In short

Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is a yangpuni galbijjim (braised short ribs in a metal pot) restaurant tucked down an alley in Seomyeon, Busanjin, Busan. For a late dinner with her mother-in-law, the writer ordered the braised ribs for two plus Jeolla-do aged kimchi, rice balls and a seafood potato pancake, alternating between perilla leaf wraps and the ribs spooned over plain rice. The sauce at Sinchon Yangpuni is mild rather than harsh, so it suited eating with an elder, and the seafood potato pancake turned out to be the surprise favourite.

Table spread of yangpuni braised ribs at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch

I had errands to run in Seomyeon with my mother-in-law, and we stopped by Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch for a late dinner. I've always liked galbijjim (braised short ribs), so we decided to try the yangpuni style. We also ordered Jeolla-do aged kimchi, rice balls, and seafood potato pancake, and the combination worked out better than I expected — we got to taste a little bit of everything.

Inside Sinchon Yangpuni: atmosphere and seating

Inside Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch, there were more tables than I expected, and quite a few other diners were eating when we arrived. Overall it had that comfortable feel of a restaurant that's been around a while.

Menu listing braised ribs and other meal options

The menu had regular meal options besides the braised ribs, so it seemed like a place you could come for a proper meal or drop by in the evening for drinks with anju (drinking snacks). Personally, a restaurant with this kind of vibe always gets my expectations up a bit haha.

What we ordered: braised ribs for two, Jeolla-do aged kimchi, rice balls and seafood potato pancake

At Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch, every table has a QR code you use to order. That day we ordered the yangpuni galbijjim for two, Jeolla-do aged kimchi, rice balls, and seafood potato pancake.

At first I only meant to order the braised ribs, but flipping through the menu made me want a pancake too, and also rice to eat with the ribs broth, so I kept adding things one by one haha. Looking back, I think we ordered well. The seafood potato pancake in particular turned out better than I expected!!

Why the seafood potato pancake was the surprise winner

Honestly, the most surprisingly delicious dish that day at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch was the seafood potato pancake. As you can see in the photos, it came out quite large with the outside fried to a nice golden brown.

The first bite was crispy, and with the potato mixed in, it had a different feel from an ordinary pancake. Crispy outside, soft with that distinct potato texture inside — I kept reaching for more. The seafood bits scattered through it added a nice bit of bite too!

I already love pancakes of all kinds, so I ordered this one with high hopes, and it really delivered. Eating it alongside the ribs, I found myself alternating between the spicy sauce and a crunchy bite of pancake, and in the end we nearly finished the whole thing haha.

Rice balls instead of a rice bowl with the yangpuni braised ribs

You can't have braised ribs without rice. This time, instead of a plain rice bowl, we ordered rice balls.

After a short wait, the braised ribs arrived in a large yangpu (metal bowl). At first, it came topped generously with aged kimchi, bean sprouts, and green onion, and it was satisfying watching the ingredients simmer together with the broth.

After some trimming and a bit more simmering, we dug in — the sauce had soaked well into the ribs, and it paired great with rice. The braised ribs were actually the main reason I went looking for a Seomyeon ribs spot that day, and it turned out even better than expected. The sauce wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, and eating it together with the aged kimchi and bean sprouts changed the flavor in a good way.

How Sinchon Yangpuni tells you to eat the perilla leaf wraps

On the table at Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch, there were instructions for the best way to enjoy the braised ribs.

Instructions for making a perilla leaf wrap

The method was to put rice, braised ribs, aged kimchi, and bean sprouts or green onion onto a perilla leaf along with the side dishes and wrap it all up, so I gave it a try as instructed. It definitely felt different from just eating the ribs plain — with the perilla aroma added and the crunch of the bean sprouts, several flavors hit all at once.

That said, I actually found it just as tasty without piling on extra ingredients — just braised ribs, aged kimchi, and rice. Honestly, it was delicious plain too, so partway through I just ate however I liked 😆 The rib meat was fairly tender, which made it easy to pile on top of rice, and the sauce went really well with it.

On the way out, I noticed there's an annex branch right across the street haha.

Is Sinchon Yangpuni a good Seomyeon dinner with parents?

After this visit, I felt that Sinchon Yangpuni Seomyeon Main Branch is better suited to ordering several dishes to share rather than just the braised ribs alone. The ribs were great with rice, and it was fun eating them wrapped in perilla leaves with various ingredients the way the restaurant suggested.

When I'm looking for a good Seomyeon ribs spot, the flavor of the sauce matters, but I also pay attention to whether the sides pair well with the meat — and that day, eating the aged kimchi, bean sprouts, and perilla leaf together never got tiring. Personally, the seafood potato pancake really won me over!! I went in thinking only about the braised ribs and came out having enjoyed the seafood potato pancake just as much haha.

If you're looking for somewhere to have lunch in Seomyeon, or a place to sit and chat over a Korean meal in the evening, this is worth a visit. It's especially good for visiting with family to share several dishes, and it worked out fine for eating with an elder, as it did for us that day. I went with my mother-in-law, and we both left satisfied. Next time, I'd order the braised ribs again for sure, and I'd definitely get the seafood potato pancake again too.
