Daegu bar off Dongseong-ro with garlic suyuk for two: Sangbong

A few days ago I went to Dongseong-ro in the evening to grab dinner and a casual drink, and ended up at Sangbong Dongseong-ro (상봉 동성로). There are so many bars in Dongseong-ro that I was stuck deciding where to go — but that day I was craving something like suyuk (boiled pork), so I gave this place a try.

What is the atmosphere like at Sangbong Dongseong-ro?

Sangbong sits inside an alley off the main Dongseong-ro strip, and when I visited in the evening the place already had quite a few people inside. It wasn't a hushed, quiet kind of spot — more the comfortable kind where you can drink and chat easily, and it seemed like a good place to bring friends too.

Sangbong Dongseong-ro menu and what two people ordered

The menu turned out to be more varied than I expected. There were hearty options like suyuk and jeongol (hot pot), alongside simple sides like ramyeon and fries, so picking drinking snacks was easy. After some deliberation, we went with the garlic suyuk.

• Plain ramyeon — ₩4,500
• Lemon draft beer — ₩6,000
• And a cola on top

At first we only planned to order the suyuk, but I figured a bar visit needs at least one soupy dish, so we added the ramyeon too, haha.

Garlic suyuk at 27,000 won: taste and portion size

After a short wait, the garlic suyuk arrived first. It's a dish with garlic piled on top of the boiled pork, and the portion looked decent — more than I expected.

The pork was on the soft side, so it was easy to eat, and pairing it with the garlic added a nice aroma that made it taste better than plain suyuk alone. I already enjoy suyuk-style dishes as bar food, so I had no complaints this time either.

It wasn't a bold or spicy flavor — more the kind of easygoing dish that's comfortable to keep eating.

Lemon draft beer at 6,000 won

The lemon draft beer we ordered came out too. With the lemon in it, it felt a bit more refreshing than a regular draft beer. Sipping it alongside the suyuk worked well, and even though I meant to keep the drinking light that day, eating and chatting together made the whole meal stretch out slowly. Since I don't drink much, I also ordered a cola, haha.

Plain ramyeon at 4,500 won: worth adding?

And then the plain ramyeon we ordered midway through!

Ramyeon is one of those dishes you can't help wanting to order at a bar. Eating the suyuk made me crave a warm broth, and having ramyeon alongside it really hit the spot.

At ₩4,500, it wasn't a big deal to add on top of another dish either. Between the suyuk and the ramyeon, the two of us ended up surprisingly full.

Rather than ordering a bunch of dishes right from the start, it seems smarter to order one main dish first and then add ramyeon or a side if you're still hungry.

That day I got to have dinner and a drink in Dongseong-ro for the first time in a while, and it was a comfortable evening of conversation — not some elaborate feast, just good time spent over one shared dish.

If you're looking for a bar in Dongseong-ro, it's worth browsing the menu board — besides what we ordered, there were also plenty of other options like suyuk, jeongol, and various jeon (savory pancakes).

How much does dinner and drinks for two cost?

We ordered garlic suyuk, plain ramyeon, lemon draft beer, and a cola, coming to about ₩39,500 total. If you're meeting a friend in Dongseong-ro and want somewhere to sit over good bar food and talk comfortably, this place is worth a try. Next time I go, I'd like to try some of the other dishes I didn't get to this time :)
