Weekday opening rush for duck wrap set, mala soup in Daegu: Mirim

In short

Mirim Yangjang Daegu is a Peking duck-focused bar in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu. Arriving at the weekday 11:30am opening, two diners ordered the duck wrap set and Mirim mala soup, finding the Peking duck — reportedly over 30 hours from drying to roasting — crisp-skinned and juicy inside, while the seafood-packed mala soup cleared the palate. The portions for two, duck wrap set plus mala soup, were generous.

Today I'm sharing an honest review from my sponsored visit to 📍Mirim Yangjang📍, the Peking duck specialist that's all the buzz in Gyodong, Daegu.

I really love Peking duck normally, and when I heard there was a place serving the real deal right in the middle of Gyodong, Daegu, I headed over with a fluttery heart 😉🫶🎶

The exterior gives off a retro yet exotic vibe from the outside, so I thought it'd be perfect for anyone looking for an atmospheric bar in Gyodong, Daegu or a spot for a group gathering.

There were way more tables than I expected from the outside. Two-, four-, and six-person tables are all available and adjustable, and the interior was really cool inside.

Weekday opening run and the wait

My partner and I did a weekday 11:30am opening run, and just after noon, guests kept streaming in. If you're worried about waiting at this popular spot, I'd recommend making a Naver blog reservation before you visit.

Crisp outside, juicy inside — 30 hours of care behind the Peking duck

Mirim Yangjang's signature Peking duck spread

The signature, main-event dish here is definitely the Peking duck! Amazingly, the process from drying to roasting the duck reportedly takes over 30 hours of time and effort 📢

I eat duck fairly often, and I even had Peking duck in Hong Kong this past spring. But honestly, if I'd known about Mirim Yangjang, I wouldn't have needed to go all the way to Hong Kong 🙆‍♀️✌️ Tasting authentic Peking duck right here in Daegu — the best.

Neatly arranged slices of Peking duck
Plate of duck showing its crisp skin

Plated neatly on the table, the duck clearly showed all that effort put into it. It was textbook 'crisp outside, juicy inside' — biting through the crackly skin into the tender, moist, mild meat was so appealing. 📢(You really have to try it, twice!)📢

Thanks to the healthy fat that's characteristic of duck, it wasn't greasy at all and had a rich, savory flavor that filled the mouth. The taste was so clean and refined, without any gamey smell, that I immediately thought, 'Ah, I have to bring my parents here next time!' It was that deep and special.

The mild duck combined with the crunch of the vegetables and the salty-sweet sauce made for total satisfaction with every bite ❣️ It was truly a top-tier delicacy that you never get tired of reaching for. Since it's a combination anyone can enjoy without dislikes, it seems like a perfect menu item for a work dinner or group gathering.

A delicacy enjoyed to the fullest: the duck wrap set

To enjoy the Peking duck in more varied ways, I ordered the duck wrap set. The way it works is you place a piece of mild duck on a thin, chewy grilled ya-mil-byeong (thin wheat pancake), add crunchy vegetables and the special sauce to taste, and wrap it up.

Loaded with seafood! The spicy, tingling Mirim mala soup

Mala soup broth loaded with seafood and vegetables

After enjoying the mild, savory duck wraps for a while, I started craving a bit of spicy broth, so we ordered the 'Mirim mala soup' (mala tang) as a side.

The Mirim mala soup came out bubbling away on a burner, and it was even more packed with ingredients than I expected! Fresh seafood and vegetables filled the pot generously, giving the broth a deep, rich flavor.

The moderately tingling, spicy broth contrasted with the savory duck and cleared the palate completely. With two of us sharing the duck wrap set and the mala soup, the portion was more than plenty, and we finished the meal satisfied and full.

The perfect pairing of crisp-outside, juicy-inside Peking duck, finished after a long 30-hour wait, and the spicy mala soup that clears you right up! If you're looking for a Gyodong, Daegu restaurant with an unusual menu and refined flavor, be sure to visit Mirim Yangjang this weekend.
