On the way to Gimcheon, I spent a while wondering what to eat in Apo. It felt like a waste to just pass through, so I searched around and one place stood out for having an unusually large number of reviews: Sonamu Sikdang. With that many reviews, I figured it had to be a real Apo hotspot, so my wife and I decided to stop for lunch.

Where do you park at Sonamu Sikdang?
Don't worry about parking. There's an Apo public parking lot right across from the restaurant, so you can just pull in. Other reviews mentioned it easily fits 30-40 cars, and when we went there was plenty of room.
A weekday lunch, and the hall was already full

My first impression was that a place this busy has to be busy for a reason. The moment we opened the door, the dining hall was full. Even on a weekday afternoon, this level of crowd made it clear it's a genuine Gimcheon local favorite. We waited a bit before being seated, and while waiting, plenty of people were already having a drink in the middle of the day, which gave the place a real local feel.
Choosing the seasoned grate-grilled bulgogi

Looking at the menu, there was quite a variety — grilled eel, grilled squid on the grate, and more.
But looking around at the other tables, everyone was eating the grate-grilled bulgogi.
At that point there was no need to even ask what the restaurant's signature dish was.
Since it was just the two of us, I figured it was a good chance to eat something spicy, so we went with the seasoned grate-grilled bulgogi.
Briquette smoke flavor: the real thing

When the meat came out on the grate, the smoke flavor stood out right away. That aroma you only get from grilling directly over briquettes or charcoal was properly soaked into the meat — one bite in, and I understood why everyone orders this dish.

The seasoning wasn't overpowering either, just enough to bring out the meat's own flavor, so my chopsticks kept going back for more. It's been a while since I've had that combination — not overly seasoned, yet packed full of that briquette smoke flavor.

These days a lot of places try to fake that smoky taste with strong seasoning, but here the actual aroma of meat grilled over fire was fully intact. The subtle smoked scent that rose up with every bite made it hard to stop eating.
8 side dishes that taste like home cooking

About 8 side dishes came out, and that was quietly impressive too.
These weren't the usual grill restaurant side dishes — they genuinely felt like something made at home.

I was especially glad to see the sweet potato stem side dish, since it's rare these days — it's a hassle to prep and doesn't show up much anymore. It showed real care in the spread.
Soup made with Sonamu Sikdang's own soybean paste

I also tried a spoonful of the doenjang (soybean paste) stew — it wasn't the usual heavy soybean paste flavor you get at grill restaurants, but had a clean, homemade taste. I later learned they actually use house-made soybean paste. No wonder it was different.
Suhyangmi rice: care down to every grain

The rice was noted as being suhyangmi, and once I saw that, the rice tasted even better.
From the side dishes to the soybean paste to the rice, it was clear that care went into every ingredient.
Leaving Sonamu Sikdang: next time, the chive pancake
I wasn't actually all that hungry, so I went back and forth for a while over whether to order the chive pancake I saw coming freshly grilled to the table next to us.
In the end I couldn't decide, so I skipped it — but after finishing the grate-grilled bulgogi, I suddenly wanted that chive pancake badly. I'm definitely ordering it next time. If the grilled squid or eel come out with the same briquette smoke flavor, they'd probably be delicious too, so I've already added two more items to my list for next visit. This place really is a hidden gem.

On the way out, a cool cup of plum tea.
It helped with digestion and felt great.
Throughout the meal, the staff were quick and attentive despite being busy. Even with the crowd, it never felt chaotic — everyone seemed to move in sync. Seeing that kind of service confirmed this really is a long-standing Gimcheon local favorite.

For value against the price, there's nowhere quite like this. The smoke flavor of the meat, the side dish spread, the soybean paste — nothing was phoned in, so "great value hidden gem" fits perfectly. It's a great Gimcheon lunch spot to know for whenever you pass through. If you're looking for an Apo hotspot, it's hard to find one this satisfying, and it holds up just as well as a Gimcheon lunch spot in general. You can really taste the owner's skill here, so I'll be back next time I pass through Gimcheon. It had been a while since I had such a proper, happy meal.
