No-wait weekday lunch and cheese cutlet at Hongdae restaurant Omil

In short

Omil Hongdae is a Western-style restaurant on the second floor of a building near Exit 4 of Hongik University Station in Mapo, Seoul. On this weekday lunch visit there was no wait at all, and the sizzling cheese cutlet that was sold out last time finally arrived, ordered alongside salmon gnocchi, Sprite and orange juice. The thick cutlet with cheese both inside and out, plus chewy gnocchi with thick pieces of salmon, made Omil Hongdae worth the second try.

There was a menu item I'd been curious about since last time, and I finally got to try it hahaha — the sizzling cheese cutlet on a hot plate!! While looking for good spots in Hongdae, I revisited Omil Hongdae after a while, and this time I properly ordered the cheese cutlet I'd missed out on before.

I also ordered salmon gnocchi, Sprite, and orange juice to go with it. If you're looking for a good Hongdae restaurant for a date, this Omil Hongdae review is worth checking out!!

Where is Omil Hongdae, and what is the restaurant like inside?

Omil Hongdae is close enough to Hongik University Station that it was easy to get to by public transit. Head toward Exit 4 and you'll find it without much trouble — a good spot to stop for a meal while shopping or on a date in Hongdae.

Overall the vibe was clean and cute, which felt great for a date meal. The tables are mostly set up for 2–4 people, so it works well for a group of friends too, and it fits nicely into a Hongdae date. Omil's particular cute atmosphere makes it feel a bit more relaxed and casual than a typical restaurant.

Is there a wait at Omil Hongdae on a weekday lunch?

Last time I visited on a weekend, there was a wait even at lunchtime, so I was a bit nervous — but thankfully this time I got in with no wait at all!!! (This was on a weekday lunch!)

There's a self-bar off to one side of the restaurant. You can help yourself to water and pickles as needed, and there are phone chargers too, which was convenient while eating. Hongdae has so many good restaurants that it's easy to hop somewhere else afterward, but Omil's location and comfortable vibe make it a solid stop on a date course.

What we ordered at Omil Hongdae

We ordered the sizzling cheese cutlet and salmon gnocchi! Plus Sprite and orange juice on the side. Honestly, one of the reasons I came back to Omil Hongdae was the cheese cutlet — last time I really wanted to try it but it was sold out. So sad.

Ordered Sprite and orange juice

So this time, the moment I saw it on the menu, I ordered it right away hahaha. Knowing I was finally getting to try it made me even more excited.

Sizzling cheese cutlet: cheese inside and out

The Omil Hongdae cheese cutlet finally arrived!! True to its name, the cutlet comes out on a hot sizzling plate, and the visual alone really grabbed my attention. There was so much cheese piled on top that just looking at it made me catch the savory smell.

Watching the cheese melt and bubble on the hot plate was definitely mouthwatering. So this is why it's called sizzling cheese cutlet hahaha. If you love cheese, the visual alone will win you over.

And the cutlet was really thick. The outside was fried crispy while the inside stayed moist, so the texture was great with the first bite. On top of that, with all that added cheese, a savory, salty flavor came through strongly.

When I cut into the cutlet, there was cheese inside too, stretching out in a long pull hahaha. Cheese on the outside, cheese on the inside — this dish was literally made for cheese lovers. With crispy cutlet and softly melted cheese together, the savory flavor came through rich and deep, and eating it with the onions served on the hot plate made it a bit lighter.

You get to eat it with the cheese still melted from start to finish, so cheese lovers will definitely be satisfied. I kept thinking about this dish after missing it last time due to it being sold out, and now that I've finally tried it, I get why so many people order it hahaha.

Salmon gnocchi at Omil Hongdae

The second dish was salmon gnocchi! Since the cheese cutlet was a rich, heavy dish overall between the cheese and the cutlet, I wanted something a bit different, so I ordered the salmon gnocchi alongside it.

The salmon gnocchi came with a smooth sauce, gnocchi, and thick pieces of salmon. It looked pretty appetizing, and with several elements on one plate, it worked well as a main dish.

Chewy gnocchi lifted up with a fork

The gnocchi had a chewy yet soft texture. It wasn't too firm when bitten into, and the sauce soaked into the gnocchi well, so each bite had a rich, savory flavor. The salmon was also thick — lightly seared on the outside and moist on the inside, pairing nicely with the gnocchi.

The salmon's distinct savory flavor went well with the smooth sauce, and combined with the chewy texture of the gnocchi, it was so good!! That wraps up this very happy Omil Hongdae review!! Hope this helps if you're planning a visit~~!
