Today I went out for drinks with a friend in Dongseong-ro, Daegu, for the first time in a while. There are so many stylish bars around Dongseong-ro these days, but this time I wanted somewhere a bit different to sit and chat comfortably. Somewhere with that cozy pojangmacha (street-tent bar) feel, but still relaxed enough for a proper catch-up with a friend rather than loud and packed — that's how I ended up at Room Pojangmacha in Daegu's Dongseong-ro 🍻

It keeps that classic pojangmacha vibe while the seating is divided into separate spaces, which made it more comfortable than I expected. Dongseong-ro gets especially lively in the evenings, and that energy was in the air that night too, which put me in a good mood.

Looking at the signature items, there was a lot of variety, and even the dish names were fun to read. It's especially great to have this much choice when you're out with a group.

What we ordered: dakdoritang, fried shrimp, okonomiyaki and old-style bingsu

1. Dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew)

The first thing we ordered was dakdoritang. The spicy, savory broth with tender chicken is exactly the kind of thing that calls for soju. It comes pre-cooked, so you just simmer it briefly and it's ready — quick and easy. The smell as it simmered was amazing, and I was so hungry by then, ㅠㅠ. It's the signature dish here, so definitely worth ordering on a visit.

2. Fried shrimp

The crispy fried shrimp had that savory, toasty flavor from the first bite. The batter was crunchy while the shrimp stayed plump and springy inside — perfect as a drinking snack. Best eaten hot, and paired with draft beer it was the kind of dish you keep reaching for. A good pick if you want something light to go alongside a main dish.

3. Okonomiyaki

Finding okonomiyaki at a pojangmacha was a fun surprise. The soft batter was loaded with various ingredients for a rich flavor, and the sauce-and-mayo combo worked really well. Eaten warm, it had a savory, salty kick that made it a solid drinking snack too.

4. Old-style bingsu (shaved ice dessert)

After drinking, I got a craving for something sweet, so we ordered the old-style bingsu! Finely shaved ice topped with sweet red beans and nutty toppings gave it that nostalgic old-school bingsu flavor. It wasn't overly sweet, more mellow, which made it a great dessert after drinking. The size was easy to share between friends too — a good way to end the meal :)

Matcha draft beer and other unusual drinks

At a bar, the drinks matter just as much as the food, right?! Room Pojangmacha has the basics — soju and beer — plus cheongha, makgeolli, and more. And if you're after something more unusual, there's matcha draft beer, matcha makgeolli bowl, and misugaru soju worth trying.

I ordered the matcha draft beer out of curiosity — the matcha flavor was strong, so if you like matcha, it's worth trying at least once.

Pocha atmosphere with the privacy of a room

Personally, the biggest draw of this place is the combination of 'pocha vibes + room-style seating.' Some Dongseong-ro bars get so packed during peak hours that you're practically sitting on top of the next table, which makes it hard to talk, but here the divided seating meant we could chat more comfortably with friends. That kind of thing matters more than people realize at a bar. Between the food and the relaxed setting for talking, I honestly lost track of time that night.
