Weekday opening at Rama & Babana in Banwoldang, Daegu: seafood fried

I visited a long-established Indian curry restaurant in Daegu and I get it now — there's always a reason a place lasts this long. Flavors that anyone can enjoy without much divide in taste, a food spot with a gorgeous view from the all-window seating, a place that brings back memories for Daegu locals — here's my honest review of Rama & Babana, a Dongseong-ro favorite.

How to get there from Banwoldang Station

Having held its ground in one spot for so long, this restaurant clearly has something special going for it. I first came across Rama & Babana in another region, and since it's such exotic, fresh food compared to what we usually eat, I remember enjoying it a lot with a group. It seems like a great lunch option around Banwoldang and Dongseong-ro.

It's right by Exit 10 of Banwoldang Station, inside the Tongsin-golmok alley, on the 2nd floor of the KT building on the corner. It's in a noticeable spot, so it's easy to find.

All window seats: the interior atmosphere

I'd recommend this as a spot for a wedding-invitation gathering in Daegu, since the interior atmosphere is great for focusing on conversation, and the open view through the windows is lovely too. I went right at weekday opening, so I got to photograph the whole interior with no crowds around. Starting the morning off on a good note thanks to the friendly staff.

As a representative Dongseong-ro favorite, plenty of people have clearly visited before. At Rama & Babana, every seat is arranged toward the windows for an open, breezy feel with no sense of being boxed in. The atmosphere is great too, making it a fine spot for a couple's date.

Menu and what we ordered

I ordered chicken curry (1 serving), nasi goreng, butter garlic naan, and seafood fried rice. Thanks to a review event I also got a nice salad — you can choose between salad or fries. The menu here is varied enough that coming with a group means you can try a lot of different things, which makes it a great spot for gatherings too.

The full spread arrived. The fragrant smell of curry was incredible. And the portions are much more generous than they look in photos.

This is the fresh, green salad from the review event. The dressing was tangy yet mild, and it went really well with the rest of the food.

Chicken curry and butter garlic naan

This is the chicken curry with butter garlic naan. The chicken curry tends to run spicy, but it was just the right kind of spicy, which paired even better with the butter garlic naan. When you order curry, they also give you an individually wrapped hygiene glove — such a nice touch!

I tore off pieces of naan and dipped them deep into the curry. This is exactly the flavor I remembered. The just-right heat wraps around your mouth. What a rush of nostalgia from the first time I tried Rama & Babana!! Since this is the main branch, it somehow felt even tastier. True to its name, the chicken curry is loaded with chicken breast. Curries like this can get greasy with fattier cuts of meat, but the lean chicken made it so much better.

Nasi goreng wrapped in naan

Here's the nasi goreng I was most curious about, wrapped in naan into a cute round shape. What a precious sight. Soft and adorable.

They slice the nasi goreng open right in front of you. Warm steam gently rises out — it looks so appetizing. It's not the fried rice shape I expected at all, more like a dish crafted with real care.

Scoop up a spoonful and the melted cheese stretches out smoothly, with all sorts of seafood mixed in giving it a nice bite too. I get exactly why everyone who visits this restaurant makes sure to order the nasi goreng.

Seafood fried rice that feels like 1.5 servings

This is the seafood fried rice, so generous it feels like 1.5 servings. It's packed with plump, tender seafood in a portion equal to the amount of rice. The soft, chewy baby octopus is really delicious too.

It's plenty for two people to share. The seasoning isn't too strong either, so even people who can't handle curry can enjoy it. I'd recommend this dish for eating with kids too (just very slightly spicy).

Final thoughts

This is the first place that comes to mind when I want something special in Daegu. Every dish is delicious, and since it's Indian fusion food tuned to Korean tastes, there's little to no divide in preference. With such a long history, the atmosphere and even the smell bring back memories from another era, making it more of a healing spot than just a restaurant. It's a place that keeps a consistent flavor, as if it's always been waiting for you — definitely worth bringing precious guests from out of town too. That was Rama & Babana, a Dongseong-ro favorite.
