Friday lunch sushi set with cold soba in Gyeongsan: Sonsi Sushi

Visited Sonsi Sushi for Friday lunch. I figured lunchtime would be relaxed, but there were more customers than expected and the place was nearly full, so we waited a bit. That's how popular this spot is among people searching for Gyeongsan restaurants or Yeungnam University restaurants. This time we went with two people and ordered the cost-effective set, which came with sushi, sashimi rice bowl, fried shrimp, and cold soba — way more filling than I expected.

Where is Sonsi Sushi near Yeungnam University, and where do you park?

Sonsi Sushi Yeungnam University Main Branch sits right on the big road near Yeungnam University's front gate, so it's very easy to find. Hours are 11:30–21:00, no break time, open every day, and Naver reservations are only available for the 11:30 slot. Parking is available too.

I'd been to the Hayang branch several times, but hearing this is the main branch got me even more excited.

At the Hayang branch I always waited without a Catch Table system. This Yeungnam University branch has Catch Table, which was so convenient!

First time I've seen a restaurant provide sun umbrellas for waiting customers. It was only a short wait, but the sun was intense, so the umbrella really helped.

There's room for about 1 car in front of the store, and on weekdays you can also park along the road next to Mega Coffee. On weekends and holidays, street parking in front of the store is allowed. Parking isn't super spacious, so using a nearby public parking lot might be a good idea if you want more room.

Inside Sonsi Sushi: seating and free extras

Even on a weekday, the inside of Sonsi Sushi was packed. If you're visiting during lunch, it's best to plan for a bit of a wait.

Overall the vibe is clean and comfortable, seeming fine for solo dining, dates, or family outings alike.

Tissues, wet wipes, and chopsticks were all set out by the table, which was convenient,

and near the register you can even use mouthwash, a fan, floss, and hand cream. Amenities on point.

There's no restroom inside the store — you have to take a key and use the outside restroom. The key was cute so I snapped a photo.

Sonsi Sushi menu and prices

Sonsi Sushi's set menus are the value set (for 2) at ₩26,500 and the cost-effective set (for 2-3) at ₩30,500.

For assorted sushi: aged nigiri (small) 8pc ₩12,500, aged nigiri (medium) 10pc ₩15,800, aged nigiri (premium) 12pc ₩18,500. Seasonal fish half + thick salmon half (10p) is ₩17,800, and thick salmon nigiri is ₩17,800 for 10p or ₩15,000 for 8p.

There's also a kids' sushi menu, and I was impressed that soy sauce egg rice is provided for free.

We ordered the cost-effective set and paid extra by upgrading a couple items. Upgrade to 12 pieces of sushi: +₩2,700. Upgrade to Namhae anchovy cold soba: +₩5,500. So our final bill came to ₩38,700. It's meant for 2-3 people, but we were starving so we got a little greedy haha.

What comes with the value set for two to three people

The cost-effective set I ordered came with 12 pieces of aged nigiri, aged sashimi rice bowl with vinegar-chili sauce, handmade-sauce fried shrimp, and Namhae anchovy cold soba (large). I loved that instead of just eating a bunch of sushi pieces, we got a rice bowl, fried food, and noodles too, so we could taste a little of everything.

Aged nigiri, 12 pieces

First up was the aged sushi I was most looking forward to. Probably because it's aged, the texture overall was soft with a real depth of umami. The ankimo (monkfish liver), tuna, and salmon were especially good. They said the salmon is Norwegian superior-grade, aged using the konbujime method — since I love salmon, I was very satisfied.

Next was the aged sashimi rice bowl that came with the set. Honestly I didn't expect much since it was just a set item, but there was way more sashimi than I expected — loved it!

They also gave us sesame oil and aged kimchi to add to taste — we both went heavy on both, and it was so good!!

Mixed with the special vinegar-chili sauce, it was sweet and tangy — a totally different but equally delicious experience from the sushi.

Fried shrimp with house-made sauce

Next was the handmade-sauce fried shrimp. The shrimp itself was fried crisp and well, but the accompanying handmade sauce was really the kicker. Dipping it in the sauce made the flavor pop. Having fried food in the set made the whole meal feel even more abundant.

Namhae anchovy cold soba (large): just okay

Last was the Namhae anchovy cold soba (large) we paid extra to switch to. It was fine for a refreshing bite, but honestly the flavor itself was pretty plain. Next time I visit, I think I'd rather stick with udon instead of bothering to upgrade to cold soba.

38,700 won for two: why the Friday lunch set was worth it

What I liked most about Sonsi Sushi this time was being able to eat a variety of things rather than focusing on just one dish. With 12 pieces of aged sushi, a rice bowl generously loaded with sashimi, cold soba, and fried shrimp, there was honestly enough for three people. Getting to eat this variety for ₩38,700 between two of us made for a satisfying meal.

Even on a weekday lunch there was enough of a crowd to warrant a short wait, so it's a sushi spot worth trying if you're looking for Gyeongsan restaurants or Gyeongsan Yeungnam University restaurants. If you want sushi plus sashimi rice bowl and fried shrimp near Yeungnam University Station, Sonsi Sushi is worth seeking out.
