Hwangnidang-gil dessert shop, persimmon sando gift set: Tareudang
In short
Tareudang is a takeout dessert shop on Sajeong-ro in Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil, known for fruit mochi and dried persimmon sando. The new persimmon sando costs 5,000 won each, tried here in fig red-bean butter, strawberry, matcha pistachio and black sesame walnut, alongside a 6,000 won raw chocolate mochi packed to eat at home. The persimmon sando tasted best once the chill wore off and the persimmon turned soft, and the six-piece set in a bojagi wrap would make a fine Chuseok gift.

As a dessert lover and mochi lover, I stop by Tareudang pretty much every time I'm in Hwangnidang-gil, and I heard they'd just launched a new dried persimmon sando. I was curious what it tasted like, so I tried it right away on my Gyeongju trip.

What's on the Tareudang menu?

When I visited, they said the Dubai-style menu item had been discontinued. Since it's mochi with fruit inside, the lineup shifts a bit with the seasons, so keep that in mind when you go.

The egg tarts looked good too — nice and big.

Raw chocolate mochi, ₩6,000. I'd already tried the fruit mochi, so this time I picked up the new raw chocolate mochi too.

How Tareudang packs the persimmon sando set
Tareudang's desserts each come in their own plastic container, so they don't lose their shape even when you're carrying them around.

If you leave a receipt review, you can get cooler-bag packing as a free service.
The sun's still hot in the daytime, so I'd recommend getting the cooler-bag packing.
How the raw chocolate mochi tastes

I tried Tareudang's raw chocolate mochi as soon as I got home. It really looks like a chapssal donut haha 😋

Thick raw chocolate that leaves a proper bite mark, wrapped around chewy chapssal (glutinous rice cake). It was even softer with the chocolate castella powder coating the outside. Just remember the mochi needs to be eaten the same day.

I already love persimmons in general — dried, half-dried, soft ripened, or crisp — so as an eater, I'm genuinely grateful someone thought to turn dried persimmon into a dessert like this. Also proof that it's cheaper and tastier to just buy dessert bakery items than to make them yourself haha 😋

Four persimmon sando flavors compared
Fig red-bean butter persimmon sando
Dried fig with a nice crunch, red bean paste, and butter sandwiched between two pieces of dried persimmon — the texture of the chewy dried fig was really good. I'd kept it in the fridge and worried the persimmon would go hard from the chill, but it wasn't hard at all, just soft and chewy. The more you chew, the more a mellow, sweet persimmon flavor comes through, with a completely different depth from sugar sweetness.

Strawberry persimmon sando
Strawberry cream with dried strawberry and pistachio inside the persimmon sando. The bright, tangy flavor surprisingly worked really well with the persimmon.

Matcha pistachio persimmon sando
Matcha cream with dried strawberry and pistachio — similar in some ways to the strawberry one but with matcha flavor coming through, so it's less sweet than the other sandos. I think older folks would like this one too.

Black sesame walnut persimmon sando
The black sesame walnut sando has black sesame cream, red bean paste, and walnuts inside, so you get nutty flavor plus sweetness plus walnut crunch plus persimmon chewiness all at once — my mouth was basically a nutty-flavor party.
The best way to eat a persimmon sando
Tareudang's dried persimmon sando tastes better once the chill has worn off a little rather than eating it ice-cold — when the persimmon gets soft again, it tastes even sweeter. It also pairs well with americano, sikhye (sweet rice drink), or sujeonggwa (cinnamon persimmon punch).
Tareudang packs everything cleanly, tastes great, and looks pretty too. With Chuseok coming up, try getting the bojagi-wrapped Tareudang dried persimmon sando as a gift. Recommended by Jjuninmam 🧡
