Gyeongju fruit mochi shop: persimmon burst after 5 hours, Tareudang

I recently made a short trip to Gyeongju, and while wandering around Hwangnidang-gil I stopped by Tareudang, a well-known dessert spot there 😊

Where Tareudang is on Hwangnidang-gil, and what the shop is like

Tareudang sits right near the entrance to Hwangnidang-gil! It's a compact takeout shop with an orange-striped awning as the standout feature. The awning is cute and fits the Hwangnidang-gil vibe really well.

While walking around and taking in Hwangnidang-gil, the mochi on the sandwich board really caught my eye. The strawberry one looks like it'd be amazing — I can't wait for strawberry season to come back around haha.

Tareudang's fruit mochi menu and the 500 won discount on 4 or more

Looking at Tareudang's menu, there were more fruit mochi varieties than I expected! Peach yogurt, mango yogurt, gold kiwi, pineapple, fig yogurt, raw chocolate — so many kinds. If you buy 4 or more mochi, each one gets 500 won off.

Since I was traveling on foot, I only bought 3 — but once I got home and tasted them, I regretted not buying more!

They also sell egg tarts and cheesecake tarts, and both looked so good! Sadly the butter rice cake is discontinued. If you're traveling with a group, it seems great to grab a bunch of different items and eat them together back at your accommodation haha.

Free cooler bag for a Naver photo review

If you buy 3 or more at Tareudang and leave a Naver photo review, they'll give you a free box and cooler bag! My next stop was tight on time so I couldn't join the review event, and just paid the extra 1,000 won instead. Not a bad price at all, right?

The price is reasonable and the packaging design is clean and pretty, so it seems like it'd make a great gift too.

Carried for 5 hours: how did the oversized mochi hold up?

At the shop they packed the mochi right away so I didn't really notice, but once I opened it up at home, they were truly giant mochi, living up to the name. They felt heavy in hand. The packaging was in that trendy 'Han Jeong-seon style' that's popular these days, so it felt even more upscale.

I bought them around 2pm and opened the box at 7pm — so we'd been out and about together for about 5 hours ㅠㅠ. As a result, one mochi burst open. Mango and peach were fine, but the persimmon one split completely open, which was a bummer.

Of course I still ate it neatly with a spoon haha. If you're like me and can't eat these right away, and you carry them around for a long time — and you care about how they look — I'd recommend picking a firmer fruit instead of persimmon.

Why the peach yogurt mochi was my top pick

Thankfully the mango and peach kept their shape. Cutting them in half, the fruit filled the inside completely — very satisfying! The peach mochi especially had what looked like nearly half a whole peach packed in, and it paired amazingly with the yogurt cream. All three were delicious, but peach is my top pick!

Cutting into the mango one, a big chunk of yellow mango showed right from the cross-section — it looked so appetizing. The soft texture of the mango paired really well with the chewy mochi! That said, with so much cream and such a big chunk of fruit, cutting it neatly in half was harder than expected. I wanted to get a pretty cross-section shot like the YouTubers do, but since I couldn't refrigerate it right away, the cream had melted and made a clean cut difficult ㅜㅜ. Still, it tasted really, really good!! My family all loved it, so it felt worth lugging around haha.

Final verdict on Tareudang

There are so many cafés and dessert shops along Hwangnidang-gil, but Tareudang's mochi seems great either as a snack while exploring the street or to take back to your accommodation. Each one is individually wrapped in a nice way, and the cooler bag is pretty too, so it'd make a great gift.

There are so many gift-worthy desserts around — Hwangnam-bbang, chapssal-bori-bbang, sandwiches — that I was torn, but next time I'm buying Tareudang mochi as a gift!! I still want to try the gold kiwi or Shine Muscat grape mochi I haven't had yet, and pack some raw chocolate mochi and tarts along with it haha. If you're looking for fruit mochi on Hwangnidang-gil, stop by Tareudang. Highly recommend!
