🍗 Introducing the place I visited this time While looking for good food at Danyang Gugyeong Market, I stopped by Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong (단양흑마늘누룽지닭강정) (｡•ω•｡) It is known for its fantastic combination of nurungji (scorched rice) and dakgangjeong (sweet crispy Korean fried chicken), so I had to see what it was like. When you travel to Danyang, there is always so much to think about—where to go and what to eat. If you are looking for something easy to pack up and share at your accommodation, I thought this place was just right.

Location and takeaway pickup

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is inside Danyang Gugyeong Market at 31-1 Dojeon 4-gil, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. It is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with last orders at 19:30, and may close early if ingredients sell out.

True to its reputation as a Danyang Gugyeong Market favorite, it is tucked inside the market, so I naturally found myself heading over while browsing. There had been a crowd in front of the shop that suddenly disappeared, and I soon realized why: you pay first, receive a number ticket, then return to collect your order at the assigned time.

It is takeaway-only, so there is nowhere to sit and eat, but collecting your order after looking around the market meant the wait was not boring at all. For parking, I think it would be more convenient to use a nearby free parking lot rather than trying to park close to the shop.

They recommended the mild original for children and the double flavor for adults, so we ordered the double black garlic dakgangjeong. Once I tasted it, the garlic flavor really came through, so the decision was immediate.

It was hefty! The customer ahead of us bought four boxes, too! Seeing that made me think, ah, it really is a local specialty.

With one bite, I got the chewy chicken and crunchy nurungji at the same time, and the more I chewed, the more savory, nutty flavor came through. The sweet sauce on the chicken paired with the nutty nurungji made for such a fun texture~

As expected from the double flavor, which has black garlic blended into the sauce, the black garlic aroma was rich and pronounced. With brown-rice nurungji, lotus root, and fries all included, there were so many textures that I kept reaching for more (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)و

I was impressed that Danyang's local specialty, black garlic, could be enjoyed in such a different way. I meant to try just a piece or two, but before I knew it, I kept reaching for more. Between the lotus root, potatoes, nurungji, and chicken, the box was empty in no time, haha.

It had a combination that was clearly different from ordinary dakgangjeong, with a sense of pride in its own distinctive recipe. The chewy chicken, crisp nurungji, and rich black garlic flavor made it feel like a special dish you can only try in Danyang.
