Cheongju Korean set meal with spicy pork: Jeju Badang
In short
Jeju Badang is a Korean restaurant in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju, serving fish set meals and Korean dishes. I tried the lunch-special mackerel set and boneless braised hairtail with pot rice, spicy pork stir-fry, seaweed soup, and self-serve side dishes. Verdict: a neat, generous meal worth enjoying in Cheongju.

The basic table setting and self-service bar

The basic table setting prepared after ordering was so well rounded and neatly presented! A variety of banchan (Korean side dishes), including seasoned bracken fern, seasoned bean sprouts, stir-fried mushrooms, and stir-fried anchovies, arrived neatly arranged on a round tray! Spicy pork stir-fry and deeply flavorful miyeokguk (seaweed soup) came with it, so I could enjoy a generous Gagyeong-dong Korean spread even before the mains arrived!

The self-service bar, where you can easily help yourself to more side dishes, is kept very clean! It is stocked with a great variety of banchan! You can even take as much chicken and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) as you like!

You can freely bring back extra sides such as chicken, japchae, seasoned cucumber, and kimchi from the self-service bar! The chicken was much tastier than I expected! It was a real treat!
Pot rice and boneless braised hairtail

Scoop out the rice from the pot rice and pour in hot water to leave it sitting! Warming your stomach first with seaweed soup before the main meal makes everything feel so nice and clean!

The boneless braised hairtail, the restaurant's main dish, was so convenient to eat because there was no need to pick out any bones!

The reduced, sweet-spicy sauce had soaked deep into the moist, tender hairtail flesh, and placing it over warm rice naturally brought out an exclamation! The seasoning was not overpowering yet had a deep savory flavor, so a whole bowl of rice disappeared in no time.
Grilled mackerel and spicy pork stir-fry

The grilled mackerel was better than expected too! It was crisp on the outside, while the inside stayed moist and full of juices!

The mackerel's characteristically rich oiliness and tender flesh were wonderfully balanced, and even the golden-brown grilled skin was mild and delicious!

The spicy pork stir-fry was also excellent with rice, with just the right smoky flavor and seasoning! To finish, I poured savory hot water into the pot rice to make warm sungnyung (scorched-rice tea), which left my stomach feeling clean and comfortable!
