Did you know makguksu (buckwheat cold noodles) is one of the must-eat dishes when visiting Sokcho? There are so many makguksu restaurants here compared to Seoul, it's hard to pick where to go.
So this weekend, after a trip to Sokcho Beach with my husband and baby, I wanted to introduce a Sokcho makguksu restaurant we ate really well at.
It's Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch, where the combination of cool buckwheat noodles and tender suyuk (boiled pork) was excellent.
How far is Topgol Makguksu from Sokcho Beach, and is parking free?
Sokcho Topgol Makguksu Main Branch sits right next to Sokcho Beach, so it's easy to pair with a beach visit. We also walked over after playing at the beach with our baby.
You can park at a nearby public parking lot, and registering your car at checkout gets you 2 hours free! We looked around Sokcho Beach a bit, then ate, and the timing worked out perfectly.
Baby chair, baby dishware and where the stroller goes
True to its reputation as a sacred site for Sokcho's perilla oil buckwheat noodles, the place was packed inside. I'd heard there could be waits during meal times, but luckily we got seated right away.
Of course they had baby chairs, and baby dishware was provided too — great for families visiting with young kids. There were quite a few other tables with babies besides us.
There's space near the entrance where we left our stroller before going in. It looked like a spot where you could wait too, if there's a line.
There was also a free photo machine there, nice for capturing a memory from the trip. It looked like a good way to pass the time if you have to wait, and overall it felt like a thoughtful touch for customers.
As a well-known makguksu spot that's had plenty of celebrity visitors, there were several autographs on the wall, including one from Hibab. Expectations rising!
There was also a self-serve side dish bar on one side, so you could easily grab extra banchan.
Sokcho Topgol Makguksu menu, prices and what we ordered
Here's the Sokcho Topgol Makguksu menu. Noodles and dumplings run in the low teens of thousands of won, and simple side dishes like potato pancake, solo-size suyuk, and acorn jelly are around 17,000 won.
They said joining the review event gets you 2 free buckwheat dumplings, so it'd be great to grab that perk too. ^^
We ordered via the tabletop kiosk, and since it's a sacred site for perilla oil buckwheat noodles in Sokcho, that had to be on the table!

Once everything arrived, it was quite the spread, right? I worried whether two adults and a baby could finish it all, but that worry was unnecessary.
How the perilla oil makguksu and plain buckwheat makguksu tasted
The signature perilla oil buckwheat noodles look pretty from the start. The flavor was perfect to share with my baby too — mild and nutty. The description saying they aim for a mellow, deep flavor rather than something sharp really landed.
They said the noodles use a self-made sea-flavored dough blending squid ink and antler-shaped Ganoderma mushroom, which was reassuring in terms of ingredients too.
For the buckwheat noodles, the dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) broth is the kicker. It was cool and savory, and I kept going back for more.
Suyuk at 17,000 won: why we wished we'd ordered the large
And the suyuk! Why did we order the solo size? Other reviews said the portion is generous even for two people, so we went with solo-size, and while it's true the amount is generous for the price, the meat melted in my mouth the moment it hit my tongue — so good that I regretted not just ordering the 30,000-won larger size for more.
If you love meat, even as a pair, order one bowl of noodles per person plus a large suyuk. It melts in your mouth, seriously.
Of course, the jeonbyeong (savory pancake roll) — crispy outside, soft and spicy inside — was tasty too, and it was nice to sample a variety. But in my book, the suyuk was the champion!
We finished up happily, and as we were leaving, they even gave us a snack for the baby, which I really appreciated. Breakfast at Hongcheon rest stop that morning had been pretty disappointing, so I was in a sour mood, but this first meal in Sokcho was so satisfying that it turned my whole mood around. haha
