Mapo Korean set-course lunch with soy-braised abalone: Moyeon Mapo

In short

Moyeon Mapo is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) restaurant on Tojeong-ro in Yonggang-dong, Mapo District, Seoul, where every seat is inside a private room. Three of us ordered the hanwoo charcoal-grilled marinated beef and pot rice lunch course, and the soy-braised abalone served one per person plus the beef grilled tableside by staff were the highlights. Soundproofing between rooms is weak, but Moyeon Mapo is still an easy recommendation in Mapo for family gatherings or first meetings between in-laws.

Moyeon Mapo is a hanjeongsik (traditional Korean set-course) restaurant on Tojeong-ro in Yonggang-dong, Mapo District, Seoul. Today I visited this well-known Mapo hanjeongsik spot! My mom went here with her friends and loved it so much she wanted to go back — so this was her repeat pick. The food was as upscale and delicious as I'd hoped, and the restaurant was clean and private. Here's my review after visiting Moyeon's lunch course with three people~!

Where is Moyeon Mapo, and how does parking work? Valet costs 3,000 won

Moyeon Mapo is on the 1st floor of the Yeongwoo Building, 318 Tojeong-ro, Mapo-gu, near Mapo Station. There's no dedicated parking lot, so drivers should just pull up right in front of the restaurant and request valet.

Moyeon Mapo entrance and valet parking sign

Valet parking is required and costs ₩3,000. You can also pay by bank transfer! Just hand the slip to the attendant when you pick up your car.

I looked it up and there's actually a parking lot right nearby — if you're staying under an hour, Mapo Yusuji Public Parking Lot might be a decent option too.

How to book Moyeon Mapo and what the menu includes

You can book Moyeon Mapo through the Catch Table app! The menu is also viewable on Naver.

The pot rice set and course menus are only offered at lunch — since this is a popular Mapo spot near lots of offices, dinner seems to focus mainly on grilled meat.

Moyeon Mapo amenities information

They provide baby chairs and hygiene supplies, and will warm up baby food or porridge — so it's a great Mapo restaurant to bring kids to! Also, takeout gets you a 10% discount!

Inside Moyeon Mapo: no hall seating, only private rooms

Moyeon Mapo has no hall tables at all — every seat is in a private room, and rooms accommodate anywhere from 2 people to large groups.

Total Mapo Blue Ribbon Survey-worthy vibes... total Mapo hanjeongsik-famous vibes... For reference, you can also pay with Onnuri gift certificates or Naver Pay.

Once your reservation is confirmed, they show you to your room. Rooms fit anywhere from 2 people to large groups — there's no hall seating at all, everything is private rooms!

Wood-interior 4-person room at Moyeon Mapo

The wood interior added an extra layer of upscale feel.

The 4-person room isn't huge inside, but there's decent spacing between tables. For larger groups, it looks like they can remove a partition wall or something similar. Maybe because of that, soundproofing wasn't great.

Tableware and side dishes set for our headcount

The moment we walked in, tableware and side dishes were already set for exactly our headcount — it really felt like a warm welcome. So glad I booked Moyeon!

The lunch course: hanwoo charcoal-grilled beef, pot rice and one soy-braised abalone per person

Here's what makes Moyeon's lunch course great: everyone gets their own whole braised abalone...!!

Neatly arranged hanjeongsik side dishes at Moyeon

From the basket of lettuce wraps to all the side dishes, doesn't it look so neat and tidy? The taste is mild, savory Korean food that basically anyone would enjoy without complaint! I thought this would be a great Mapo restaurant to bring your parents to.

Moyeon pot rice topped with butter

How to eat the pot rice and soy-braised abalone in order

They brought out the pot rice right away, with an adorable little pat of butter on top.

Ingredients inside the pot rice after opening the lid

Wow, it was great that it came in a stone pot, but look at how generous and packed the inside was...❣️ Total mom-approved stuff.

Pot rice scooped into a rice bowl

They scooped out the rice first, then added the abalone on top.

Braised abalone placed on top of rice

There's a nice crispy scorched rice layer at the bottom, but they scooped so hard my whole portion came out in one piece...

This is the proper way to do it — scoop out the rice, pour in hot water, cover the lid, and go enjoy the side dishes and meat!

Doenjang jjigae with handmade tofu

Somewhere between cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) in flavor. Since there's no strong smell, I'd guess it's doenjang jjigae. The stew was salty and savory, and the tofu inside had that rustic, handmade-tofu texture.

Raw hanwoo charcoal bulgogi before grilling

Staff grill the hanwoo marinated beef at your table

The hanwoo charcoal bulgogi! The marbling was so beautiful I thought it was raw beef tartare at first...! I think this fresh-looking marinated beef is the secret to why this place is so good.

Staff grilling hanwoo marinated bulgogi tableside

Staff grill it themselves and transfer it onto the plate before stepping right back out! The efficiency was seamless — in and out in a flash.

Hanwoo charcoal bulgogi transferred onto the plate

I think Moyeon's strength is that the side dishes are different from typical Korean BBQ places. The cabbage wrap, the perilla leaf paste, the seaweed — all genuinely unique and delicious!

Side dishes including cabbage and perilla leaf paste

So, so healthy, and as a true Korean at heart, I absolutely love this kind of food......

Bowl of abalone braise including the innards

They even gave us the abalone's innards with the braise, which I set aside at first thinking it might be too fishy, but they turned out to be even tastier than the abalone itself...?? No fishiness, no grit, absolutely perfect...!!! I scraped the bowl clean... My stomach felt completely fine afterward too, and I think moms everywhere would love this place! Hahaha. Giving it the #1 spot for Mapo hanjeongsik restaurants!

Is Moyeon Mapo worth it for family gatherings and in-law meetings in Mapo?

Everything from the atmosphere to the neatness and taste of the food was top-notch. I also loved the system where staff only handle serving and grilling the meat, letting even a small group eat privately.

I'd recommend this as a restaurant with great atmosphere in Mapo! I heard it's also known as a spot for meeting the in-laws or celebrating a 60th birthday in Mapo, so I recommend it for that too!
