Date-night ramen with thin noodles in Beomeo-dong, Daegu: Ryusenso

In short

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch is a Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen restaurant in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu, near Suseong-gu Office Station. A couple came for dinner after a hair salon visit and ordered the Ryusenso (11,000 won), the Ryusenso Kara at spice level 2 (11,000 won) and tori karaage (8,000 won); the noodles are on the thin side, so choose the Ryusenso Asari or Ebi Miso if you prefer thick noodles. The broth is rich and the karaage arrives freshly fried, and with plenty of single seats Ryusenso is comfortable for solo diners too.

Last week after getting my hair done, I was looking for somewhere to have dinner and stumbled onto this ramen spot — it reminded me of the ramen I had in Fukuoka last year, so I went to check it out. Here's my honest review after eating there ☺️

Inside Ryusenso: solo seats and the basic table setting

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch is all on one floor, with lots of solo tables plus a variety of 4-person and 2-person tables. In particular, there were plenty of seats where solo diners could eat comfortably!

Table set with danmuji and ginger

Every table came set with basic side dishes to help yourself to — danmuji (pickled radish), ginger, pepper, and mini plates. There was even a hair tie! Let's take a proper look at the menu.

What the couple ordered at Ryusenso, and the prices

Ryusenso Beomeo Branch has 4 basic types of ramen! My boyfriend went for the tonkotsu ramen, the Ryusenso, while I picked the Ryusenso Kara since I love spicy food.

Just the look of it was insane! Such a delicious-looking spread.

How spicy is Ryusenso Kara at spice level 2?

The Ryusenso Kara (₩11,000) is a spicy Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen. This ramen lets you choose your spice level — level 1 is about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, and level 2 is spicier than Shin Ramyun but less spicy than Buldak, so I went with level 2! Honestly, I love Buldak too.

I really love spicy food, and the moment I took my first bite, the rich, spicy broth was so good! Even my boyfriend, who can't handle spice well, said it was delicious.

The noodles were definitely on the thin side. If you want something thicker, I'd recommend the Ryusenso Asari or Ebi Miso.

Tonkotsu Ryusenso: the pick for anyone who can't take heat

The Ryusenso (₩11,000) is a rich, smooth Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen made by simmering pork bones for a long time. This is the one my boyfriend ordered, since he can't handle spicy food well. It's said to use pork bone broth, and maybe that's why — the rich, smooth flavor left an impression.

It's perfect for kids, students, or adults who can't handle spice. My boyfriend said it even tasted a bit like gukbap (Korean soup with rice) haha — that's how rich the broth is!

Tori karaage at Ryusenso: the surprise of the meal

The tori karaage (₩8,000) is Japanese-style fried chicken. I didn't expect much from this one, but it turned out to be so good. Truly the real deal, just like the karaage in Japan. It comes out freshly fried — crispy on the outside, juicy chicken on the inside. Good on its own, and even better dipped in the sauce that comes with it.

Is Ryusenso Beomeo Branch worth a dinner visit?

  • If you're looking for a Beomeo-dong restaurant, a solo-dining spot in Beomeo-dong, a Daegu ramen restaurant, or a spot near Suseong-gu Office Station for eating alone, I'd recommend this place!
  • The tables come in a nice variety — solo, friends, couples, families — so solo diners can eat without feeling awkward.
  • There are 4 kinds of ramen depending on your taste: if you like spicy, go for Ryusenso Kara; if you can't handle spice, go for Ryusenso; if you want thicker noodles, try Ryusenso Asari or Ebi Miso. The rich broth is what makes this ramen so appealing.
  • There are also plenty of side dishes to choose from, like karaage, katsudon, ebi don, and yaki gyoza, so it's fun picking what to try.
