In short

Shabu20 Daegu Bokhyeon branch is an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu restaurant in Buk-gu, Daegu. I had beef with katsuobushi and sukiyaki broths at dinner, then finished with noodles, egg porridge, and soft-serve ice cream. The beef cream soup and the well-stocked self-service bar stood out most.

I visited Shabu20 Daegu Bokhyeon branch (샤브20 대구복현점), a place I had wanted to try whenever I craved shabu-shabu, for the first time. I ate plenty of beef and vegetables for dinner and enjoyed everything from the self-service bar to dessert. The beef cream soup and soft-serve ice cream were especially memorable.

What was at the self-service bar, and what stood out?

The self-service bar had meat, shabu-shabu vegetables, and vegetables for Vietnamese spring rolls. There were also sauces, broths, porridge ingredients, ingredients for naengmomil (cold buckwheat noodles), and an area with children’s tableware. The vegetables seemed fresh, and drinks and draft beer were also available as unlimited refills.

The hot food included soy-sauce and seasoned dakgangjeong (crispy sweet-spicy chicken), fried rice, takoyaki, cream pasta, stir-fried noodles, tteokbokki, and spicy whelk salad. Soybean broth and cream soup were available too.

The most memorable item was the house-made cream soup with ground beef. It had plenty of meat and a rich flavor, and I finished two bowls. The crisp dakgangjeong and takoyaki were also good to alternate with the shabu-shabu. Staff regularly checked and refilled the food, so the self-service bar stayed tidy.

Which broths did I choose for the beef?

There were five broth options, and I chose katsuobushi (bonito flakes) and sukiyaki. Briefly cooking the beef in the broth on the induction cooktop made it tender. I liked it best with wasabi sauce, and I ate plenty of vegetables alongside it.

How did I finish with noodles, porridge, and dessert?

After the meat, I added rice noodles and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) to the broth, one after the other. The broth had been simmered with meat for a long time, so the noodles absorbed the seasoning well. I brought back a little more beef to eat with the noodles.

Once I had finished the noodles, I removed most of the broth and added porridge ingredients from the self-service bar. Mixing in an egg made a simple egg porridge. I was already full, but I still enjoyed the porridge.

For dessert, I had soft-serve ice cream. It was smooth and cool, a nice way to finish the meal.

After paying, I could also take coffee or a drink in a disposable cup prepared near the counter. I was too full to have coffee. I was satisfied not only with the beef but also with the cream soup and dessert, and the spacious setting and friendly service stayed with me.
