Daegu makchang house two-person set with potato grill: Supbul Makchang

In short

Supbul Makchang is a makchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant with a bamboo-lined outdoor patio in Bolli-dong, Dalseo, Daegu. On this second visit the new two-person set menu brought 2 Iberico makchang, 1 fire makchang, 1 pork neck and Cheongdo Hanjae minari, plus potatoes grilled inside the fire makchang and a shepherd's purse doenjang stew to finish. The set runs about 3,000 won less than ordering the same dishes separately, and the free side dishes and extras at Supbul Makchang keep bringing diners back.

Revisited Supbul Makchang — great vibe, great taste, and great service all in one, haha. The terrace side has that bamboo-patio camping feel, and the interior feels like stepping into a countryside house. So cozy!

Vertical shot of Supbul Makchang's bamboo patio atmosphere

Last time I had makchang and seasoned galbisal, but since they'd added a set menu this time, I ordered it without a second thought. You could tell the food styling was done with care to match Supbul Makchang's concept — it even felt a bit more upscale.

With Iberico makchang and Iberico pork neck, it can't not be good. Such a happy Friday.

The side dish spread is generous too — a proper Bolli-dong, Daegu spot. Let me introduce it properly below :)

Supbul Makchang hours and parking in Bolli-dong, Daegu

Supbul Makchang is open daily from 17:00 to 24:00. You can park in front of the restaurant, and they said you can also use the Galbidungji parking lot.

A place I'll keep coming back to! The vibe, taste, and service are all perfect. Genius touch — they even have a mini toothbrush set and mouthwash in the bathroom...!

Interior

As expected for a Bolli-dong, Daegu favorite, it was fully booked. The '80s-90s countryside grandma's house concept gave it a warm, familiar feel.

Floor-to-ceiling glass seating area with a view of the bamboo grove

Further inside there's another space with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. You can see the outside scenery clearly, so you get that patio-grill feeling while looking out at the bamboo grove — a big plus. The cat there is so cute, ㅠ.

What is at the self-service corner?

Everything is brought to your table as standard at first, but you can freely grab extra side dishes from the self-service corner if you want more.

Peppers, garlic, mu-saengchae, kimchi, ssamjang, yangnyeomjang, and more.

There were also wrap greens and various sauces. Plates were at the self-service corner too.

The menu, from set menus to stews and noodles

There's the set menu plus à la carte options: pork makchang, fire makchang, pork neck, galmaegisal (skirt meat), beef makchang, and more. They also had minari, and plenty of good dessert-style side dishes. Doenjang stew, pork stew, gopchang jeongol, naengmyeon, ramyeon — no need for a second round afterward, haha.

What comes in the two-person set menu?

You can also order everything à la carte, but ordering the set menu came out about ₩3,000 cheaper!

Cheongdo Hanjae minari included in the set menu
Cheongdo Hanjae minari

The Cheongdo Hanjae minari (water dropwort) that came with the set! I thought minari season was already over, so I was happy to see it.

Water pitcher styled to match the restaurant's concept

Even the water pitcher sticks to the concept at this Bolli-dong makchang restaurant. Loved that it was barley tea instead of plain water.

Basic table setting with beef jangjorim, dotorimuk, and more

The basic table setting: beef jangjorim, geotjeori, kimchi, mu-saengchae, dotorimuk, beef radish soup, and assorted sauces. The hot beef radish soup was properly savory, and the quail egg jangjorim was total rice-thief material. The dotorimuk radish soup was refreshing and really settled my stomach.

How do the Iberico makchang, fire makchang and pork neck taste?

Pre-grilled Iberico makchang
Iberico makchang

Iberico makchang, extra tasty since the pigs were free-range and fed acorns. It comes pre-grilled, so you only need to sear it lightly — very convenient. I was glad the portion was bigger than I expected, haha.

Spicy-sauced Iberico fire makchang
Iberico fire makchang

I've been into spicy food lately, so I couldn't skip the fire makchang. It comes fully cooked, so you can eat it right away, or grill it a bit more on the pan to your taste.

Thick-cut Iberico pork neck
Iberico pork neck

Thick, good-colored Iberico pork neck. Once you taste it, you understand why the place is packed — a real Bolli-dong, Daegu favorite. From the solid side dishes to everything else, it's perfect. Also, they said they use oak charcoal fire to bring out extra meat aroma.

Meat and minari on the oak charcoal grill pan

I grilled the minari leaves golden brown along with the meat. I love mushrooms, so I was happy those came along too. It was so good I refilled several times. The kimchi with sesame oil and the beef jangjorim sizzle nicely on the pan too — just eat them straight off it.

Kimchi and beef jangjorim grilled together on the pan

Eating it with minari made it even more fragrant and delicious. The nutty, savory flavor of Supbul Makchang is just as good as I remembered.

Whole garlic and potato grilled inside the fire makchang: how spicy is it?

The fire makchang came with whole garlic and potato mixed in too. The sweet-and-spicy sauce was addictive. I bet it'd taste amazing with a rice ball..!

Fire makchang with whole garlic and potato mixed in

Eating it with minari seemed to mellow out the spiciness! It's not very spicy, just a mild kick, so even people who can't handle spicy food should be able to eat it.

Fire makchang wrapped in minari

It also went surprisingly well with roasted soybean powder, haha. Cuts the spice and adds nuttiness — two birds, one stone.

I like my makchang grilled nice and golden, so I cooked it crisp to my taste. Pairing it with the grilled minari leaves made it perfect.

Crisply grilled makchang with grilled minari leaves

I dipped the potato in a bit of salt after grilling it. It gets a little crisper once it cools slightly — that's the best time to eat it!!! A little tip of my own.

Potato from inside the fire makchang, dipped in salt

I'm not usually a big pork neck person, but this one was juicy and delicious. It especially went well with the shiitake wasabi.

Finishing with shepherd's purse doenjang stew and a bowl of rice

Minari doenjang stew with a bowl of rice. It tasted different from regular doenjang stew — like something a real grandma would make, honestly, haha.

Minari doenjang stew loaded with minari, served with rice

Loaded with minari, so it was fragrant. I mixed in rice and ate it happily. You can also order pot rice, so if you want a hearty meal with that old-school feel, go for it. Service, atmosphere, and taste — all three are perfect at this Bolli-dong, Daegu favorite. They even give you mouthwash on your way out, ㅠㅠ.
