Gyodae Seoul Korean BBQ with fresh beef tartare: Sodangkkae

In short

Sodangkkae O-gyeopjip Gyodae Main Branch is a cauldron-lid grilled pork restaurant on the second floor of a building a 5-minute walk from Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul. Over dinner with a friend, the writer ordered the Sodangkkae combo set for two at 81,500 won, which brings pork neck, thick-cut pork belly and pork jowl with a stew (doenjang was chosen) and yukhoe (raw beef tartare). The yukhoe is never frozen and tastes as good as at a dedicated yukhoe restaurant, so Sodangkkae is a pork place where the beef is worth ordering too.

Evening atmosphere and reservations at Sodangkkae

The restaurant was clean and reasonably spacious. I visited during dinner hours, and it was pretty busy. We had made a reservation, and there was a 'reserved' sign on our table, which felt nice and attentive! 👍

Table setting for the Sodangkkae combo set for two

What comes in the Sodangkkae combo set for two (81,500 won)?

We ordered the Sodangkkae combo set for two, which came with pork neck, pork belly, pork jowl, a stew, and yukhoe (₩81,500). The stew could be chosen between doenjang (soybean paste) stew and kimchi stew — we went with doenjang! 👏

How the table is set

The side dishes were generous too. There were perilla leaves and lettuce as well, which you can see further down in the post.

The main meats: pork neck, pork belly and pork jowl

Here's the pork belly with skin still attached, along with pork jowl and pork neck, all served together. The meat looked really fresh 🌟

Cauldron lid topped with bean sprouts, bracken, minari, and mushrooms

What stood out was that they grill bean sprouts, bracken, minari (water dropwort), enoki and king oyster mushrooms, kimchi, and even peppers together with the meat. 🫶

Staff member grilling meat and vegetables on the cauldron lid

The portions were so generous I was satisfied! And a friendly staff member grilled everything for us, so we could relax and enjoy the meal comfortably ☺️

It's been a while since I had pork belly, so watching it grill made me want to eat it right away.

The staff cut everything into bite-sized pieces for us too.

Rice in a brass bowl with macaroni salad side dish

Perilla leaves, lettuce, green onion kimchi, pickled scallions, garlic, and even macaroni salad! These are exactly the kind of side dishes I like, so I finished them all without leaving anything. 😋

The rice was served in a brass bowl, which felt true to the concept. The rice itself was well-cooked and moist.

There were also pickled peppers, ssamjang (dipping sauce), and salt to go with the meat!

The side stew: doenjang with blue crab

Doenjang stew with crab

The doenjang stew had crab in it too, so it was refreshing and not too strong-flavored, which was just right! It was packed with tofu and vegetables, and the set menu felt like great value overall. 💜

Golden-grilled pork jowl

Look at this grilled pork jowl ㅠㅠ It had been a while since I had such delicious meat.

A piece of pork jowl picked up with chopsticks

Soft texture, and biting into it you get a burst of Maillard-browned savoriness — that's pork jowl for you! 🤤

Pork belly with skin attached, served with minari

The pork belly still had its skin on, which added a chewy texture and made it even more delicious! I ate it together with minari, and the pairing was excellent.

How to eat the cauldron-lid grilled pork at its best

Perilla leaf wrap with pickled scallions and mushrooms

I carefully wrapped pickled scallions and mushrooms in a perilla leaf and ate it together. What matters most at a Korean BBQ place is fresh vegetables and good side dishes to pair with the meat, and this place delivered on both. 👏

Is the yukhoe any good at a pork restaurant?

Yukhoe included in the Sodangkkae combo set

And now, the long-awaited yukhoe! Since Sodangkkae O-gyeopjip is primarily a pork restaurant, I wondered if the yukhoe would really be good — but they don't use frozen beef, so it was genuinely delicious! It was as good as a dedicated yukhoe restaurant. I really recommend ordering it alongside the meat ㅠㅠ 👍

A bite of yukhoe with pear slices and radish sprouts

Paired with pear slices and radish sprouts, it was so delicious. The pork was great, but having tasty yukhoe alongside it made for a really satisfying meal.

Final verdict on Sodangkkae O-gyeopjip

Great for family gatherings or get-togethers with friends, and with a good ventilation system, Sodangkkae O-gyeopjip also works well for a date with a friend or partner! It's close to the subway and has parking available, so if you're heading to Gyodae Station or Gangnam, I'd recommend giving it a visit. ✨
