Gukjeyangsik, a Hapjeong restaurant with great vibes where you can enjoy lamb

I wanted to eat somewhere with a nice atmosphere today, so I visited Gukjeyangsik in Hapjeong. ✨ Great vibes plus lamb — best of both worlds! There's a bar table that's great for dates, and larger tables too, good for a family meal on a special day. 👍 It's a 5-minute walk from Hapjeong Station, so subway access was easy.

Bar seats and the mood inside Gukjeyangsik
Gukjeyangsik had soft, warm lighting that made for a great mood. 🫶 We sat at the bar.

Even though we came early, the place was already packed!

We had reservations, and the table was already set up! My name was placed on it so I spotted it right away.

There was even a cute drawing of a sheep on it!
What's on the Gukjeyangsik menu: sauces and side dishes

The menu had both set courses and à la carte items — signature, premium, and hwaro jjamppong sets, plus side dishes and single dishes. The lamb comes in three cuts: shoulder rack, French rack, and lamb sirloin. We ordered the premium hwaro set and gunbaoyuk!

For dipping sauces there were pepper and salt, wasabi, whole grain mustard, and a mint sauce.
Side dishes included carrot rapée, corn salad, pickled lemon tomatoes, and cabbage salad!
Even the chopstick rest was a panda — so cute 🥰
What we drank: Cass beer with lamb

Today's drink was Cass! I was torn between draft Budweiser and bottled Harbin, but ended up craving Cass, so Cass it was!
The premium charcoal set: French rack and shoulder rack

Staff grilled the meat for us directly. Being served course by course like this felt almost like a meat omakase. 🫢 The premium set was a combination of French rack and shoulder rack. First they grilled the French rack together with vegetables ☺️

The meat was grilled further away than I expected, so no worries about oil splatter — nice touch. Ordering the set gets you tacos and shishito-charred bean sprouts, and the bean sprouts were seriously delicious! 👍

Looking at this golden-brown grilling shot again makes me want to eat it all over..!

They cut it into perfect bite-size pieces for us. The staff member was so gentle too! Was that the owner..?

They plated it directly onto our side plates, so all we had to do was pick it up and eat. Dipped in plain salt and pepper, the meat was juicy and had none of that distinct lamb smell — delicious. 🤤

The grilled vegetables especially had a nice Maillard char that made them extra tasty! Pineapple and green onion cut the richness and paired really well with the meat.

The grilled baek-kimchi (white kimchi) among the grilled vegetables was good too, but this grilled pineapple was totally my thing! 🫶

Next up was the shoulder rack! The meat was so thick, I was completely satisfied! Everything's better thick 😋

The shoulder rack was savory, clean-tasting, and tender. It just melted in my mouth..
Lamb tacos and which sauce to pair

They topped tortillas with meat so we could make tacos. There was plenty of meat, enough to fill your mouth completely 💕

Tomato salsa and sour cream sauce also came out, so you can add them to taste!

I piled on carrot rapée, then topped it with salsa and sour cream — it filled my mouth completely and made me so happy!
Guobaorou, the crispy side to go with beer

Can't drink beer without gunbaoyuk (crispy sweet-and-sour pork), so we ordered it — and I nearly burst! It was chewy with a great meaty texture, really enjoyable. The sauce coating wasn't overdone either, which I liked. 👍
