Hapjeong lamb barbecue restaurant for family dinner: Gukjeyangsik

In short

Gukjeyangsik is a lamb barbecue restaurant near Exit 8 of Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul, where lamb is grilled over a charcoal brazier at the table. On a family dinner visit, the signature charcoal set for two brought shoulder rack and lamb sirloin — the shoulder rack tender, the sirloin deeper in lamb flavour — and staff grilled each cut, so the meal ended with lamb fried rice while everyone kept talking. Gukjeyangsik is a calm place to come back to for lamb chops in Hapjeong.

Where is Gukjeyangsik, the lamb restaurant near Hapjeong Station?

Gukjeyangsik is a lamb specialist restaurant not far from Exit 8 of Hapjeong Station, where you grill lamb over charcoal at the table. I was looking for a good Hapjeong restaurant for a family dinner and ended up here. I like lamb in general, so I figured this was the time to have a proper lamb chop meal.

What comes in the signature charcoal set for two

We ordered the signature charcoal set for two plus lamb fried rice. The set comes with shoulder rack and lamb sirloin, along with stir-fried bean sprouts, mixed vegetables, tacos, and more. Bottom line first: the meat was genuinely delicious.

Shoulder rack vs. lamb sirloin: how do they differ?

The shoulder rack in particular was tender with great texture — no chewiness at all, just the juices and flavor of the meat coming through. Lamb sirloin was different in its own way. Where shoulder rack leans tender, lamb sirloin has a stronger lamb flavor. If you like that distinctive gamey lamb character, the sirloin might actually be the more memorable one.

Staff grill every cut at your table

What I loved most was that staff grill the meat for you. They cooked each cut themselves, so we didn't have to worry about the grilling and could just talk as a family while we ate. The service was friendly without being overbearing, which I appreciated. And surprisingly, the sauces and sides ended up being memorable too.

Maldon salt, wholegrain mustard and mint jelly

First I tried it dipped in Maldon salt, and it really brought out the meat's flavor — the salt itself gives the lamb a little kick. Wasabi worked well too, and the wholegrain mustard was great. Eating lamb with mustard in particular cut through any richness and made each bite feel clean. Then there was a third sauce, a green house-made one (mint jelly), which had a slightly sweet taste. The low-sodium soy sauce was also good — instead of hitting hard with saltiness, it added a savory depth to the meat, which I personally liked.

The mixed vegetables didn't feel like a token side either — they went well with the lamb.

The lamb tacos served at the end

And the tacos that arrive at the end were a real treat too. Grilled lamb goes into a tortilla with tomato salsa and mayonnaise, and this combination works surprisingly well. With the freshness of the tomato salsa and the richness of the mayonnaise added to the lamb, it felt like a completely different dish from the lamb chops we'd been eating earlier.

Finishing the meal with lamb fried rice

The lamb fried rice we ordered to finish was also good. The subtle lamb aroma made it noticeably different from ordinary fried rice. If you like finishing a meat meal with fried rice, this is worth ordering.

What is the atmosphere like at Gukjeyangsik?

I liked the atmosphere too. It's cozy overall with comfortable lighting — a good place to have a drink alongside your lamb.

That's probably why it would suit anyone looking for a Hapjeong bar as well. Personally, I liked that it's calm enough to talk over, rather than a loud, bustling BBQ joint. We came for a family dinner, but I think it would work just as well for a date or a casual drink.

Is Gukjeyangsik worth it for lamb chops in Hapjeong?

Overall, I was satisfied with everything we ate. From the meat to the sauces, the side dishes, the mixed vegetables, and even the tacos, everything felt carefully thought out. The lamb in particular was quite satisfying compared to other lamb chops I've had recently. If you're looking for a good lamb chop restaurant in Hapjeong, I'd recommend Gukjeyangsik fairly confidently.

Among Hapjeong meat restaurants, this one suits you well if you want to enjoy various sides along with the meat rather than just eat and leave. The price isn't exactly light, but considering the tableside grilling service and the overall food composition, it was a satisfying family dinner.

The tiramisu is insanely good!!! You have to try it!!!

Above all, the meat itself was so good that day that it made me think, 'I'm glad I came for lamb.' Next time I'm craving lamb chops in Hapjeong,

I think I'll be heading back to Gukjeyangsik.
