On a chilly day, jeuk-seok tteokbokki is the truth
Today I'm sharing a review of Hyeonseonine, the tteokbokki place I always used to visit whenever I met up with a friend who lives in Yongsan ✨
I'm already obsessed with tteokbokki in general, but I go even more crazy for jeuk-seok tteokbokki — the kind you simmer bubbling at your own table. On chilly days like these, isn't that bubbling pot of tteokbokki just the truth 🤤 Drooling already. The moment I met up with my friend, without a second thought, my feet just carried me straight there.

A chimney out front, and the smell of tteokbokki the moment you step in
You can spot Hyeonseonine from far away — oh, there it is! — because you can see its chimney even from a distance! It's a building with such a cozy, nostalgic vibe 🏠✨ From the moment you step through the entrance, the smell of tteokbokki hits your nose and gets the saliva going, phew phew

No wait on a weekday afternoon, Catch Table on weekends
Inside, the place is clean and spacious. There are plenty of seats, but since customers were already seated I couldn't get a photo — the tables are generously spaced and the turnover was quick. It seems like a great place to bring friends or acquaintances! A lot of couples come here on dates too — (actually... that day there were couples seated on both sides of us.....) When I visited on a weekend it was crowded, so I reserved through Catch Table and waited, but this time, since it was a weekday afternoon, I got in easily. (Once you walk in, the Catch Table stand is right there by the door)

Even when it's busy, the turnover is fast, and Catch Table's reservation function means the wait isn't too rough!

Kiosk ordering: jeuk-seok tteokbokki and fried rice
As soon as you walk in there's a kiosk right in front of you — order there and then take your seat! There's tteokbokki, gimbap (seaweed rice roll), fried snacks and other single items, plus set menus, and a separate jeuk-seok tteokbokki menu. We ordered the jeuk-seok tteokbokki and fried rice!

Where's the self-bar and the water?
While waiting for the tteokbokki I took a good look around the place — the self-bar has plates, pickled radish, aprons and more. Water comes from a purifier over by the kitchen, and you have to fill it up there yourself. (I remember getting confused about this the first time I came, so — noted, noted.)

A pot packed full of jeuk-seok tteokbokki
Finally, today's star arrived... da-dun-! 🔥 The jeuk-seok tteokbokki and fried rice I ordered showed up! Red sauce, vegetables, rice cakes, fish cakes, egg, cabbage, and even glass noodles — all piled generously into a pot filled to the brim. It wasn't even boiling yet and I already wanted to dig in, vroom vroom...

That bubbling sound of jeuk-seok tteokbokki simmering — I'm losing it..ㅠ The spicy-sweet sauce soaked so well into the rice cakes that I honestly just scarfed it down. Hyeonseonine's jeuk-seok tteokbokki is love... 💗 The fish cakes were amazing too.... and the yaki-mandu (pan-fried dumplings) soaked up that broth so well, chomp chomp...

Finishing with fried rice, cleared to the last bite
To finish: fried rice!! The jeuk-seok tteokbokki portion was so generous I worried we'd never have room for the fried rice too, but that worry turned out pointless — we stir-fried and finished it off, no problem, hahaha. How could I possibly hold back... after jeuk-seok tteokbokki, you just can't skip the fried rice 🤫 !!!!!!

Looks like Hyeonseonine also has a review event running! Check it out and try upsizing to a slushie or a bigger tteokbokki. If you're looking for good tteokbokki in Yongsan, or for that hot, bubbling jeuk-seok tteokbokki, I'd really recommend giving 'Hyeonseonine Yongsan' a try. You won't regret it 👍
