Mild vs. spicy octopus skewers with kids at Munkkocchi, Jeonju

It's been a while since our overnight trip to Jeonju~! If you're wondering what to do in Jeonju, Hanok Village is a must, right?! Wandering around the village, the rows of street food stalls really catch your eye haha!

Octopus skewers are something I always buy whenever I visit Jeonju!! We enjoyed them so much again this time that it felt like a waste to keep it to myself?! So here's my review of Munkkocchi Mungangjeong, a Jeonju Hanok Village food spot~!

Why we ended up waiting in line

We were walking past this octopus skewer shop in Jeonju Hanok Village that was unusually packed with people!! Munkkocchi Mungangjeong!! There were so many people that we thought about coming back later, but it was getting to be lunchtime and we were hungry, so we decided to just line up haha. In front of the shop there were food models on display, so it was easy to see at a glance what everything looked like haha. On one side they were also selling ice cream and slushies!!

At Munkkocchi Mungangjeong, a well-known spot in Jeonju Hanok Village, you pay for your slushy first, then get a cup and fill it yourself!!

The ice cream is apparently Sanghamokjang milk ice cream, so it seemed like it would be rich and delicious haha. Sounds like a great light snack while you're in Jeonju Hanok Village?!

What we ordered

We ordered the mild and spicy katsuo octopus skewers, plus a mild cheese chicken skewer!! Since it was hot and we figured we'd get thirsty eating, we also ordered a homemade sikhye~! Haha

Right next to the Jeonju Munkkocchi Mungangjeong storefront, there's a small seating area where you can sit and eat!! A spot happened to open up, so we could sit down comfortably and eat haha. It's so nice being able to sit down and enjoy Jeonju Hanok Village street food comfortably~!!!

After finishing your octopus skewers, a Jeonju Hanok Village food staple, you should throw your trash away in the bins across the street!!! Please don't leave it at the Munkkocchi shop~!! If you look across the street toward the Donghak Revolution Memorial Hall, you'll see blue plastic bags along the road — throw your trash there~!!

Starting with a sip of homemade sikhye

First came the mild and spicy octopus skewers along with the homemade sikhye!! Look at the visuals~! Even among the many octopus skewer shops in Jeonju Hanok Village, these really stand out haha.

Before digging into the skewers, I tried the sikhye first, and oh~! It was less sweet than I expected, which made it really nice haha. If it had been too sweet in the heat it would've just made us thirstier, but the sikhye they sell here was just right!!

It was fine to just eat it as is, but my husband said he'd pull the octopus off the skewer to make it easier to eat... 😆 and ended up getting sauce all over his hands doing it. Hahaha... Still, thanks to him I got to eat it more easily lol. Even before taking a bite, the smoky grilled smell was wafting over, making me want to dig in right away haha.

Mild vs. spicy octopus skewer: which one won?

I took a bite of the octopus skewer expecting it to be chewy, but it was much more tender than I thought!! The plump octopus wasn't tough at all, which I loved haha.

I tried the mild one first, and it had a sweetness kids would love!! There was also plenty of katsuobushi (bonito flakes) on top, adding a salty, savory depth that made it even more delicious haha. My son grabbed it for himself and polished it off alone, saying it was so good... hahaha 😅

My husband likes spicy food, so we ordered the spicy octopus skewer too! He said it wasn't spicy at all by his standards, so I tried a bite myself and it was a nice sweet-and-spicy flavor! It was just spicy enough that even I, someone who can't handle spicy food, could enjoy it — I was so happy about that lol. I think I ended up eating about half of it lol. Personally, I actually liked the spicy one more than the mild one~!

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong really is a must-try octopus skewer spot in Jeonju Hanok Village!! After trying it, I understood exactly why people line up for it!!😋 Definitely one to recommend for Jeonju Hanok Village food lol.

My daughter's pick: cheese chicken skewer

My daughter's cheese chicken skewer came piled high with 100% natural mozzarella cheese 🤤 It had a completely different, equally appealing look compared to the katsuobushi-topped ones?! My husband tried to pull it apart to make it easier for her to eat, but our daughter said it wouldn't taste as good that way lol. She dug in enthusiastically, hair flying everywhere 😆

Octopus skewers are a must-try snack while browsing Jeonju Hanok Village's street food, whenever you get hungry or just feel like a bite haha.

The owner didn't hold back on the cheese, piling it on generously, so every bite of the chicken skewer stretched with long cheese pulls haha. The chicken wasn't dry at all — it was nice and tender~! With the sweet sauce plus the savory cheese, there's no way it could taste bad!! A great Jeonju Hanok Village spot that kids can enjoy without any fuss too!!
