Lamb ribs and lamb skewers table setting at Gukje Yangyukgwan in Cheongju

The weather's been all over the place lately and my body has been screaming for some energy replenishment, right? At times like this, a hearty, delicious meat meal is the best medicine there is. So today I dug up a spot in Cheongju that's been getting super hot as a lamb skewer and lamb rib place, and went to check it out!

This is Gukje Yangyukgwan (국제양육관) in Cheongju, where both the meat quality and the atmosphere were spot on. I was surprised once by the visuals of the meat, and fell for it a second time when I tasted how the juices burst out — here's my super detailed, real review.

What does the room at Gukje Yangyukgwan look like?

The ceiling at Gukje Yangyukgwan has these pretty red accent lanterns (hongdeung) hanging that give off serious Chinese-restaurant vibes — the atmosphere is honestly insane. With the modern, clean black-and-wood table settings plus the flashy lighting, it's a perfect spot for a hangout with friends or a date night with your partner!

The moment I stepped inside, my first thought was, "wow, this is genuinely spotless!" Usually at lamb skewer or grilled meat places, there's that stale grease smell or smoke that makes things feel a bit grimy, but you don't need to worry about any of that here haha.

Self-serve bar with refillable side dishes

Self-serve side dish bar with free refills

There's a self-serve bar off to one side of the restaurant where you can refill side dishes as much as you want without feeling awkward about it. The small plates were neatly stacked and the sauce containers were spotless, which instantly told me how serious the owner is about hygiene.

Miniature figurines at the counter

There were these super cute miniature props displayed on one side of the counter! The tiny lamb skewer grill model was so adorable ㅠㅠ They'd shrunk down the actual grill, skewers, raw meat, cumin sauce container, and even a Tsingtao beer bottle into tiny miniatures, exactly the same. It was so detailed and cute that I spent ages looking around and taking pictures 😆

Basic side dishes and the cumin spice setup

Once you finish ordering, the basic side dishes get set up quickly. Salty, savory stir-fried peanuts to whet your appetite before the meat is cooked, crunchy and umami-packed zha cai (pickled mustard tuber), and sweet-and-sour pickled onions to cut through the meat's richness — all served in neat little bowls!

The magic powders that take the meat up a notch! On one side of the table, four kinds of spices — cumin (jiran), sunflower-seed-shaped cumin seeds, salt, and spicy chili powder — are set up neatly in hygienic stainless steel containers. Small spoons are stuck in each one for easy scooping, so you can mix them to your taste on your plate and dip away 😄

Grilling the lamb ribs and bone-in lamb ribs on the wire grate

Today's highlight, the main meat, arrived on a wide silver tray! The moment it hit the table, an involuntary gasp came out of me ㅠㅠ

Raw lamb ribs and bone-in lamb ribs served on a silver tray

Isn't the visual just gorgeous? Thick-cut raw lamb ribs with fantastic marbling, bone-in lamb ribs showing off their vivid red color, and skewers thoroughly coated in the special seasoning — the whole tray comes packed to the brim. The meat was glistening even before it hit the grill, and I was already drooling 🥳🥳

Marbled lamb ribs and seasoned lamb skewers

The heat was strong, so the thick bone-in lamb ribs and lamb ribs sizzled away and cooked up perfectly crisp outside, juicy inside. They grilled the bone-in ribs whole, then held them with tongs and snipped them into bite-sized pieces with scissors — you could see the moist juices between each cut, which made me even hungrier,,, ㅜㅜ

Did the lamb at Gukje Yangyukgwan taste gamey?

The moment I picked up a nicely browned piece of meat, dipped it right into the cumin spice, and put it in my mouth...! No exaggeration, the juices burst everywhere and it just melted in my mouth. There wasn't even a trace of that unpleasant gamey smell lamb can have, so even people trying lamb for the first time could definitely enjoy this without any issue.

The lamb skewers, cooked while spinning around on the grill, kept the seasoning's umami alive — an absolutely perfect side to go with beer!
