Gangneung sashimi restaurant pension takeout, ₩80,000 set: Samsami-ne
In short
Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch is a 25-year-old ocean-view sashimi restaurant standing right in front of Gyeongpodae Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon. On a mother-daughter trip, the value red sea bream yubiki sashimi + mulhoe set for two (₩80,000) was ordered as takeout and eaten back at the pension, and the side dishes and sauces came doubled for two people — generous enough that the pair left food behind. The red sea bream yubiki struck a good balance between skin and flesh, with the chew of live-fish sashimi and the savoury depth of aged sashimi in one bite.

Why Samsami-ne was the pick for red sea bream yubiki on a Gangneung trip with mom
Today's post covers a must-do sashimi stop on any Gangneung trip 🐟 Since I was traveling with my mom, I searched hard and found a special place specializing in red sea bream yubiki — so we went to Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch ✨

Plus it's located right in front of Gyeongpodae Beach, so you can enjoy sashimi with a perfect, unobstructed view of the sea 🌊

I came all the way to Gangneung, so an ordinary fish-market-style sashimi place felt a bit disappointing — that's how I found this place. Here you can enjoy fresh live-fish sashimi and red sea bream yubiki in an affordable, great-value set!

₩9,900 cup mulhoe takeout: enough for one person
So many people come to Gangneung alone, and if going to a sashimi restaurant by yourself feels intimidating, there's a ₩9,900 cup mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) takeout menu that's just right 🥤 At such an affordable price, it's perfect to take out and enjoy easily at the beach or at your accommodation ❣️

Parking and the seating at Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch
There's plenty of parking right in front of the restaurant, so you can go in comfortably without worrying about parking 🚗
The interior overall felt clean and well-kept, and they even had a baby chair ready, so it seemed good for families or bringing your parents along! The restaurant stretches back quite far, so it was more spacious than I expected, with plenty of seating 🪑
The window seats with the blue sea in full view were truly perfect...💙
There's also a reserved section on one side of the restaurant, so I'd recommend booking ahead if you're coming with a group or family 🤍

True to a well-known local spot, it was full of TV appearance posters and photos and signatures from many celebrities who've visited 🤭

The restroom is located inside the restaurant and kept very clean, so it was satisfying to use 🚽

What comes in the ₩80,000 red sea bream yubiki + mulhoe takeout set for two

I took mine out to eat at the pension I'd booked! The packaging was really thorough, and they packed the side dishes and vegetable salad so generously that the two of us ended up leaving some behind 🥹✨
Here's the main event, the red sea bream yubiki sashimi 🐟 I've had red sea bream before, but this was my first time trying it yubiki-style — even just visually, it looked thick, plump, and glossy, with a texture that looked amazing 🤍
What is yubiki sashimi?
Yubiki is a method where fish is left unskinned and the skin alone is flash-cooked with hot water. Apparently the cooked skin pattern resembles pine bark, so it's also called "matsukawa" — knowing that made it feel even more fascinating and delicious to eat 💡

Apparently Samsami-ne serves their red sea bream yubiki with 25 years of cooking know-how, and honestly, the balance between skin and flesh texture was perfect 👍

My fiancé and I go fishing together often, so I've had plenty of freshly caught sea bream and aged sashimi too — this felt like it combined only the best parts: the chewiness of freshly caught live-fish sashimi and the umami of well-aged sashimi...💛

Side dishes packed in twos, one set per person
They gave us all the essential side dishes you can't skip when eating sashimi — except the sushi ingredients — doubled per person, generously matched to how many of us there were 🥹
The sashimi was so firm and dense that no matter what sauce you dipped it in, the savory flavor of the fish itself never got lost — it stayed strong to the last bite!
With vegetable prices these days, a lot of sashimi restaurants skip the perilla leaves, but here they gave us fresh ones, which I really appreciated 😋

If you get tired of eating just sashimi, they also give you sushi rice as a basic side so you can make your own self-serve sushi 🍣

The complimentary mulhoe that comes with the set
This is the complimentary mulhoe that comes with the set 🥢🧊 It had quite a lot of fish in it too, so it had a good chew, and with plenty of vegetables and broth it was no less satisfying than an à la carte mulhoe order! They also gave us plenty of thin wheat noodles for both of us, so mixing them into the broth made for just the right amount alongside the sashimi!

The broth is everything with mulhoe, and this rich broth wasn't bland at all — the seasoning was spot on, perfect for stimulating your appetite! Eating the noodles along with the fish and vegetables released that sweet-and-tangy burst, making it the best palate cleanser to eat in between bites...✨
