Date night in Mangwon after a while 🤍 Today we went to Baennori, a great-atmosphere Korean pub (jumak-style bar) in Mangwon-dong, for a good meal date.

- Mon-Fri 17:00-01:00 (next day) / Sat 16:00-02:00 / Sun 16:00-01:00

We walked over from Mapo-gu Office, and Mangwon has so many good restaurants and alleys worth wandering that just walking felt like part of the date.

What Baennori looks like inside, and the seating
Baennori has about 8 tables for 4-6 people, plus standing-bar seats. The name itself sounds like an old-school tavern, which had me curious, but inside it turned out to be a warm wood-toned space, comfortable to sit and enjoy for a while.

What to know before visiting Baennori
✔️ On Monday-Thursday, you don't have to order alcohol. Instead, you must order at least one ade (non-alcoholic highball).

What we ordered at Baennori and what it cost
After some deliberation, we ordered the 🧄 garlic gopdoritang (spicy tripe and vegetable stew) + 🥩 beef tartare gimbap set (₩52,000), an extra 🍙 gimbap roll (₩4,000), and a 🍒 bokbunja (black raspberry) highball (₩7,000). You can pick the gimbap filling from cucumber / perilla leaf / cucumber+perilla leaf — we went with cucumber+perilla leaf! 🥒

The appetizer was warm tofu with changnanjeot (seasoned fish roe), gang-doenjang (thick soybean paste dip), and stir-fried kimchi. Perfect for whetting the appetite. It only made us hungrier lol.

The bokbunja highball~ Since it's non-alcoholic it feels like a soft drink haha. The first sip is sweet with bokbunja flavor and the finish is slightly bitter, which pairs perfectly with the food.

The garlic gopdoritang came out first, and it really is loaded with garlic haha.

What does the beef tartare gimbap taste like?
Baennori's beef tartare gimbap catches your eye just from the look of it haha. Chewy beef tartare packed with crisp vegetables gave it great texture and it looked gorgeous too. They said they get 1++ hanwoo beef eye of round from Majang-dong and prep it themselves — no wonder it's delicious!!

Inside the garlic gopdoritang: broth and ingredients
True to its name, the garlic gopdoritang has a subtle garlic aroma in the broth, and the flavor is spicy yet deep, making it a great pairing for drinks.

The gopdoritang is generously loaded with beef small intestine, large intestine, and chicken in a rich, spicy broth — the kind of flavor that makes you want a drink 🍻

The two dishes went really well together — take a bite of the beef tartare gimbap, then a sip of the spicy gopdoritang broth, and you can't stop reaching for more. Adding a bit of wasabi seemed to bring out the savory flavor of the beef tartare even more 🤤

Why the extra gimbap roll is worth ordering
One roll of the extra gimbap we ordered — if we'd only had one roll, it wouldn't have been enough, so I'm glad we ordered it. There was plenty of beef tartare, so even two rolls were plenty. Piling it high with beef tartare feels like adult privilege haha. Unlike typical gimbap packed tight with rice and fillings, this one has lots of crisp ingredients like cucumber and pickled radish, which harmonize well with the beef tartare!

The stew was also generously filled with beef small intestine, large intestine, and chicken, so my husband and I didn't have to fight over not having enough haha. Plenty of potato too, which I love 🥔 The leftover broth was thick and rich, and I regret not being able to add the noodle option because we were too full. If you go, make sure to add the noodles 🍜
Review event and the complimentary dessert
One last thing — don't miss the review event! Yakgwa (honey cookie) ice cream — grab it if it's offered, it's delicious hahaha. The owner also gave us Shine Muscat grapes on the house. Especially after eating the spicy gopdoritang, having cold, sweet ice cream was just perfect haha. From the mains to the final dessert, it was all perfect.
Is Baennori worth it for a Mangwon-dong date night?
On the way there, we saw quite a few foreign visitors too — this is a place I'd recommend for enjoying Korea's distinctive flavors and atmosphere! Eating well on a Mangwon-dong date and spending a relaxed evening chatting away without noticing the time pass made it an even better day 🌙
