Mapo bossam restaurant with kimjang-style kimchi: Pyeongidambaek

In short

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a bossam (boiled pork wrap) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Yanghwa-ro 7-gil, between Mangwon Station and Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul. Ordering the medium bossam boiled pork and anchovy kalguksu brought pork that tasted like homemade kimjang (winter kimchi-making) season, plus kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) that rank among the best the writer has ever eaten. The restaurant is also spacious and comfortable, and the kimchi alone makes the noodle soup worth expecting great things from.

A place I've walked past so many times,,, I had no idea they sold bossam! I thought it was just a kalguksu place haha

📍 Address 84 Yanghwa-ro 7-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul ⏰ Hours Daily 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM ⏳ Break time 2:30 PM 9:30 PM

On foot, it's genuinely close to both Mangwon Station and Hapjeong Station

The outside of the restaurant

A photo taken going in

Dimly lit exterior of Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch on the way out

and here's the one coming out,,, I took it wondering if it'd look different, and I guess autumn is on its way~~~ same dim, dusky feel though

How spacious is the inside?

Spacious restaurant interior photographed right after sitting down

A photo I took right after sitting down! The inside is super spacious

A slightly hidden seat inside the restaurant

There's a bit of a hidden seat like this too!

A wide view of the dining hall tables

The place feels like it's about 1.5 times bigger than what's shown in these photos — it looked incredibly spacious

The kitchen visible from the dining hall

You can see the kitchen too

There's a restroom inside too — vivid, very vivid~~~

Side dish notice and side dish station

*Side dishes are not self-serve* Call staff if you want more!

Ordering the bossam boiled pork seems to get you this spread~ alba cabbage + salted shrimp + garlic + peppers + ssamjang (dipping sauce) + boiled pork + assorted kimchis!

The menu board and bossam pork prices

Menu board listing bossam pork and kalguksu prices

Bossam boiled pork! Medium ₩42,000 Large ₩49,000 + Anchovy kalguksu ₩5,000 when ordering pork Autumn menu: seasoned oysters

True to being a kalguksu place, they also have kalguksu and bone soup rice on the menu

Let me say this upfront — the kimchi is out of this world. I'm literally drooling typing this. You know how it goes — if the kimchi's amazing, the kalguksu's gonna be insane too

Notice about the spicy chili paste option

If you're eating at Pyeongidambaek and ordered the less spicy option, mix in all the chili paste they give you~~~

Notice for the Naver receipt review event

They're also running a Naver receipt review event...

This is how the bossam pork comes out,,, take a look at the plating

Order: 1 medium bossam boiled pork, 1 anchovy kalguksu

Table set with cups and salt and pepper

Checking out the table after ordering! Cups and salt and pepper!!! Already smells like kalguksu

Kimchi and kkakdugi served first

Kimchi and kkakdugi arrived!!! But get this

Close-up of the kkakdugi plate

I think I ate the kkakdugi first and it was genuinely amazing,,, wait, is the kimchi like this too? One bite in and I knew — the kalguksu here must be insane! Immediately made my friend try the kimchi too. Seriously one of the best kimchis I've had in my life

Napa cabbage kimchi with a kimjang-season look

The look of it really brings back kimjang (winter kimchi-making) memories? That feeling of making kimchi at home~~~

Table spread with boiled pork, kimchi, and wrap ingredients

The kimchis, the boiled pork, and all the wrap ingredients to go with it

How's the boiled pork? Tastes like kimjang season

Oh, I'm salivating again just remembering the boiled pork — genuinely tastes like the bossam you eat during kimjang season, different from other bossam I've had, and just incredible~~~~~ a legit bossam spot near Hapjeong...

Full spread of medium bossam boiled pork
Boiled pork slices on a plate
Boiled pork served with alba cabbage and salted shrimp
Boiled pork paired with kimchi wraps

Trying the boiled pork properly — no but seriously, the taste of kimjang-season pork plus that insane kimchi

A piece of boiled pork placed on a wrap
Boiled pork wrapped with kimchi on top

Ugh, I'm drooling,,,

Refilled garlic and peppers

Garlic and pepper refill! While still eating~~~

The anchovy kalguksu tastes like a mild jangchi guksu

The anchovy kalguksu that was also ordered

I also ordered the anchovy kalguksu

Mixed in the chili paste and had a bite — totally mild, like jangchi guksu (banquet noodles)!!! Delicious

Now I'm curious about their other kalguksu too! The kimchi here is seriously insane... let's all go to Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu in Mangwon-dong for lunch or dinner

Wrapping up

A restaurant that's spacious and comfortable, with genuinely amazing kimchi! The bossam pork was incredible but the kalguksu was great too. I really hope everyone gets to try the bossam pork here. Recommending Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu as a bossam spot near Mangwon and Hapjeong~~~
