Jeju Korean restaurant breakfast: Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi

In short

Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi (협재온뚝배기) is a Korean restaurant directly in front of Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju. I had beef seonji haejangguk and Jeju black pork bulgogi for breakfast; the soup was generously filled, and the thick pork worked well with its lightly sweet seasoning.

Can you have an early breakfast in Hyeopjae?

While traveling in Jeju, I was looking for somewhere filling to eat in the morning and visited Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi (협재온뚝배기). It was easy to find directly in front of Hyeopjae Beach, and being able to eat from 8 a.m. made it a good fit for an early schedule.

The hours listed in the original post are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. There is a break from 2 to 5 p.m., and it is regularly closed on Mondays. The address is 5 Hyeopjae 2-gil, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju, South Korea, and the post said free parking was available a one-minute walk from the restaurant.

What is it like for a meal with children?

The interior was clean and comfortable. High chairs were available, so it looked suitable for visiting with children.

There was also a separate children's haejangguk (hangover soup) menu. I was told it was not spicy, and when I visited, two children were eating the haejangguk well.

What did I order, and how much was it?

I ordered beef seonji haejangguk (hangover soup with congealed blood) and Jeju black pork bulgogi, along with a bowl of rice. The rice was listed as a separate charge, and the total came to ₩24,000.

  • Beef seonji haejangguk: ₩11,000
  • Jeju black pork bulgogi: ₩12,000
  • Rice: ₩1,000

What sides come with the haejangguk?

Several side dishes came with the meal. I especially liked the salty seaweed stems, so I had them refilled once.

Chili peppers and minced garlic were also provided separately, so I could add them to the haejangguk to taste.

How much was in the seonji haejangguk, and what did it taste like?

The food came out quickly. The portions were large, making it a filling breakfast.

The beef seonji haejangguk was generously filled with seonji and Korean beef. Once I mixed in the dadegi (seasoned chili paste), the broth became darker and was pleasantly spicy.

What does the black pork bulgogi taste like, and what comes with it?

The Jeju black pork bulgogi had thick pieces of meat and a lightly sweet seasoning. The seasoning was not overpowering, and I thought children might enjoy the flavor too. I wrapped plenty of the meat in lettuce.

Bone broth also came with the black pork bulgogi. It was neither too salty nor too bland for my taste, so it went well alongside the bulgogi.

I enjoyed both the side dishes and the two main dishes, and the owner was kind. Being able to eat from early in the morning suited my Jeju travel schedule, when I wanted a filling breakfast.
