Ramen restaurant next to MuseumX in Sokcho: chashudon, Ichiba Ramen

In short

Ichiba Ramen is an authentic Japanese ramen restaurant on Jungang-ro in Sokcho, right next door to MuseumX. The special tonkotsu ramen is built on a broth simmered for 30 hours and goes down well with draft beer, while the chashudon side arrives piled with enough pork to share — spooned over rice, it was a hit with the writer's child. Ichiba Ramen works both as dinner after a day of activities with kids and as a hangover lunch the next day.

If you're traveling in Sokcho and want something deep and rich instead of the usual seafood, or you're just looking for a good dinner spot in Sokcho, I have a place to recommend. This is my review of Ichiba Ramen, a restaurant that left an impression with its long-simmered, authentically Japanese broth and generous meat toppings. It's right next to MuseumX, so it's also a great stop for dinner after doing an experience there with kids.

What is Ichiba Ramen like inside?

Ichiba Ramen feels like a small local ramen shop straight out of Japan. The moment I opened the door, I was greeted by the gentle scent of ramen broth and a warm, cozy atmosphere.

I heard the owner once left for Japan with just a one-way plane ticket to learn ramen, and trained directly under five top craftsmen in Saitama, Tokyo, and Osaka. Thanks to the clean, comfortable tables, it felt easy to bring a kid along, and it's also the kind of warm space where adults can happily enjoy a cold draft beer.

Every table comes set with water, pickled radish, and pepper. The restaurant started in Busan in 2006 and moved to Sokcho last year, where they began making their broth fresh again — and that craftsmanship and expertise really came through everywhere in the space.

Special Tonkotsu Ramen with a 30-hour broth, plus draft beer

I ordered Ichiba Ramen's signature dish, the Special Tonkotsu Ramen. The broth is made from carefully selected domestic pork bones, simmered for a full 30 hours — and maybe that's why it had a deep, savory richness with absolutely no artificial seasoning taste, the kind that fills you right up.

The moment I took a bite, the heavy, rounded flavor wrapped around my whole mouth and my travel fatigue melted away — honestly perfect as a hangover cure too.

The noodles were so chewy and springy! And best of all, the chashu (braised pork) on top was so thick that I didn't need to ration the meat at all — I got to enjoy it generously right down to the last bite.

Pairing it with a refreshing draft beer that hit the spot completely washed away my travel fatigue. The combination of rich ramen broth and crisp draft beer really needs no explanation — it was the best.

Chashudon as a side: will a child eat it?

The chashudon (braised pork rice bowl) I ordered as a side alongside the ramen surprised me the moment it arrived — the portion was so generous. They really didn't hold back on the meat, so calling it a 'side' felt almost wrong; it was practically a second main dish.

It was packed with soft, savory chashu, so I put some on my kid's rice and they gobbled it right up. Winning over even my kid's picky taste made it an even more satisfying choice.

Is Ichiba Ramen good value?

With dining prices rising so much these days, getting a proper bowl of authentic ramen can often feel like a splurge — but Ichiba Ramen's prices were surprisingly reasonable given the 30-hour broth and carefully chosen ingredients, which made me like it even more.

Because the broth is made with good ingredients and simmered so thoroughly, I didn't feel bloated or greasy afterward — just clean and comfortable. The owner's expertise and pride come through completely in the broth alone, making this a genuine find that nails both value and quality.

Honest verdict and tips before you visit Ichiba Ramen

If you want to taste a rich broth built from the know-how and time of a Japanese-trained craftsman, Ichiba Ramen absolutely deserves a spot on your Sokcho food list.

  • Tip one — thanks to the deep broth simmered for 30 hours, it's a great place to visit for a hangover lunch the day after traveling.
  • Tip two — if you stop by in the evening, be sure to try the combination of thick chashu ramen, chashudon, and a cold draft beer.
