Braised hairtail (galchi-jorim) was the one dish my boyfriend and I most wanted to eat on our Jeju trip! We booked a stay near Seongsan Ilchulbong, and the moment we checked out, we headed straight to Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon, a Seongsan spot famous for it 😙

We ordered the set menu, and even the side dishes felt like a home-cooked meal, which I loved. With soy marinated crab, grilled tilefish, sea urchin seaweed soup, and braised hairtail all in one hearty spread, this felt like a great galchi-jorim spot to bring family to too!! So so good 👍

Parking and reservations at Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon Seongsan Ilchulbong Branch
Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon is on Sinyang-ro in Seongsan-eup, and we parked on the road right in front of the restaurant. Since it was lunchtime and we figured it'd be busy, we booked ahead through Naver Reservation before visiting haha 😆
The sign really stands out haha, and I thought "this soy marinated crab must be so good," but seeing that they even ship it nationwide told me it's the real deal haha

The inside has this cozy, clean, neighborhood-restaurant vibe. They were also selling some Jeju-style snacks! And above all, every single staff member was so kind, which made the whole meal feel even better!!

The menu at Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon: sets and single dishes
Jejurowoon Cheonghaewon's menu has more than just braised hairtail — there are various sets built around mains like mackerel kimchi stew and black pork stir-fry. There's also à la carte if you want to order to your taste. But the sets are so good that pretty much everyone was ordering them 😉😉

Side dishes and the sea urchin seaweed soup
The side dishes came out in full spread. Every single one was delicious. It really had that home-cooked feel. I think this was the first time on this Jeju trip I properly ate Korean food, hahaha. We got to choose between sea urchin seaweed soup or seafood hot pot, and I went with the sea urchin seaweed soup!!

There was quite a bit of sea urchin in it, and it wasn't too salty, so it was easy to slurp down! I'm guessing they kept the seasoning light on purpose because of how bold the braised hairtail is 😳😳 Anyway, I'm a fan! I was curious about the seafood hot pot too, but it wasn't available as a single-portion order, which was a bit of a bummer 😂😂

Is the braised hairtail enough for two people?
The star of the show, the braised hairtail, finally arrived. It had 5–6 pieces of hairtail in it — looked like almost a whole fish! The hairtail wasn't super thick, but it was plenty for two people to share, and the flesh was packed full!

Such a hearty spread laid out on the table 💖 Isn't this way too generous?! Now I'm going to end up eating more rice...? Braised hairtail + grilled tilefish + soy marinated crab + sea urchin seaweed soup + stone pot rice — the perfect lineup. I see why so many older guests come here..!!!

Grilled tilefish, the best rice partner in the set
Next up, the grilled tilefish. It looked a little thin at first(?), but once I picked it apart, there was actually a lot of meat, and it was so tasty I lost count of how many bites of rice it took down with it. Such a good grilled tilefish, truly a rice thief!!! Crispy on the outside, so even the skin was delicious,,,🤎

The rice comes as stone pot rice too, so you get to enjoy the crispy scorched rice at the bottom, which is such a nice touch — stone pot rice always makes you feel a little extra pampered haha. At the end, mixing that scorched rice with hairtail flesh or grilled tilefish is out of this world 😝😝
Braised hairtail down to the last piece of radish
There was so much to eat that the star dish, braised hairtail, showed up kind of late haha. It had simmered down a bit more by the time we got to it. The hairtail wasn't huge, but there was plenty of flesh, and mixing rice into the sauce was pure bliss 🤭🤭

There were plenty of big chunks of radish soaked in sauce, and they just crumbled apart — so sweet and delicious. I guess radish really does play a big part in making braised hairtail great ❣

Putting the hairtail on top of white rice — how could that not be delicious!? I was eating so well that my boyfriend kept picking the meat off the bone for me, and I ended up stuffed 😙😙

The soy marinated crab, good enough that they ship it nationwide, was also packed full of meat and really delicious!! Not too salty either, good good 👍👍
