Red snapper sashimi platter at Bandalseom in Ansan: Eochongye 1beonji

In short

Eochongye 1beonji is a sashimi restaurant with outdoor tent seating on the Bandalseom food street in Ansan, Gyeonggi. Stopping by with her mom before a barefoot walk on Daebudo, the writer ordered the medium red snapper sashimi platter at 58,000 won and sushi rice at 3,000 won, and the platter came with red snapper, flounder, mullet and even flounder fin, while the sushi rice alone filled about one and a half bowls. For generous portions at a fair price on Bandalseom, Eochongye 1beonji is the answer.

Personally, among sashimi restaurants, I like the ones with lots of side dishes and small sashimi portions, but I also really like the ones that pile on the sashimi — and the red snapper platter at Eochongye 1beonji, Bandalseom's must-visit sashimi restaurant, totally hit the spot.

Where is Eochongye 1beonji, and what are its hours and parking?

This is the view from the front! The weather was perfect for outdoor tent dining, so we thought about sitting out there too, but we ended up going inside since we were worried about mosquitoes.

Weekday evening at the outdoor tent seats and the fish tanks

There were already a lot of people sitting in the outdoor tent seating at Eochongye 1beonji! Even though it was a weekday, once it hit past 6pm, guests started filling the outdoor seats one by one.

What surprised me at the fish tank of Eochongye 1beonji, Bandalseom's must-visit sashimi restaurant, was that every fish had its name labeled. You can check the names before picking your fish!

Eochongye 1beonji has a menu on a tablet too, but this printed one was easier to take in at a glance, so I photographed this instead.

What side dishes come with the sashimi?

The basic banchan at Eochongye 1beonji, Bandalseom's must-visit sashimi restaurant, includes shiitake wasabi, makjang dipping sauce, seaweed soup, seaweed salad, white kimchi, peas, lettuce wraps, garlic, and silkworm pupae! Great for a first round before the sashimi comes out, with a bottle of something to drink ~

The seaweed soup was served warm, so it was nice to have a bite of it in between eating sashimi.

Medium red snapper platter — red snapper, flounder and mullet

The red snapper platter at Eochongye 1beonji is red snapper + flounder + two seasonal fish, and this time they included mullet. Here are four ways to enjoy the sashimi:

  • Wasabi soy sauce for sashimi
  • Chojang (vinegar chili sauce)
  • Shiitake wasabi
  • Special makjang dipping sauce

The mullet was nice and thick, and got more savory the more I chewed it. I think it would be plenty delicious eaten on its own.

The combo of perilla leaf with shiitake wasabi and radish sprouts was tasty too. Since everything was so fresh, each ingredient's own aroma really came through.

How much sushi rice do you get for 3,000 won?

The sushi rice at Eochongye 1beonji really comes out generous! I expected something like 8 pieces the way other places do it, but it's more like a bowl and a half of rice — seriously a lot.

No need to shape it fancy — just scoop it into little rounds with a spoon, top with sashimi, add a dab of wasabi, a splash of soy sauce, a bit of radish sprouts, and boom — you've basically got a sushi restaurant-level bite going on.

Flounder fin + white kimchi = kimchi flounder sushi

The flounder fin comes out seriously long haha, one piece feels like two! Eating the flounder fin together with white kimchi and sushi rice — isn't that basically aged-kimchi flounder sushi?

There's so much sushi rice that it's great for pairing with all the different kinds of sashimi. Bandalseom's must-visit sashimi restaurant is Eochongye 1beonji.

Small or medium platter for two people?

I'm the type who eats sashimi three pieces at a time ~ My mom said she was full, so I ended up finishing all the leftover sashimi. For two people you could go with the small size, but for me, if I want to fill up on sashimi plus a bit of rice, I really need at least the medium (me and my huge appetite). The perilla-leaf aroma was full, and the sashimi was so savory.

After mixing the special makjang well and dipping the sashimi in it, I immediately got why it's recommended. Clean, sweet, and delicious.

It's great dipped in chojang too!
