Sokcho sashimi takeout for afternoon drinks after fishing: Hoega

In short

Hoega is a sashimi takeout shop in an alley off Beonyeong-ro 43beon-gil in Sokcho, an easy walk from Sokcho Jungang Market. After a morning of fishing, mixed sashimi (small, ₩43,000) and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup, ₩17,000) with abalone and sea squirt were packed to go and laid out with afternoon drinks back at the hotel. Thick cuts rather than paper-thin slices and an icy broth made Hoega worth the pickup, and the lot beside the shop plus a mart right out front made it easy by car.

A sashimi takeout spot near Sokcho Jungang Market — Hoega. You know that feeling when you're traveling in Sokcho and want sashimi, but the touristy places by the harbor feel pricey, and grabbing takeout from just any random shop feels like a gamble? This is a place I found while searching for a good sashimi takeout spot in Sokcho, and it's close enough to Jungang Market that packing it up and eating at the hotel worked out great :)

Where is Hoega, and how far is it from Sokcho Jungang Market?

Hoega sits in the alley right beside Sokcho Jungang Market (Beonyeong-ro 43beon-gil), so it's a good spot to browse the market, then pack up sashimi to take back to the hotel. There's a parking lot right beside the shop too.

Worth noting if you're looking for sashimi takeout near Sokcho Jungang Market — it's close enough to the market that you can wander around and then grab sashimi to bring back to your room. Perfect for anyone staying in Sokcho who just wants a relaxed drink like me! Sashimi is great eaten fresh, but there's something about enjoying it comfortably back at the hotel that's part of the fun of traveling haha.

The quiet Beonyeong-ro 43beon-gil alley in Sokcho where Hoega is located

There's a parking lot right beside the shop, and the alley itself feels a lot calmer than the market — a really convenient spot to drive up and grab takeout. The places deep inside the market are just too crowded... honestly I preferred this location because of that.

Accessibility actually matters a lot when hunting for a sashimi takeout spot in Sokcho, and this place did well on that front. There were other takeout customers when I visited too — overall it had a relaxed, no-pressure vibe for stopping by and packing up.

There's a mart right in front of the restaurant, so I ordered the sashimi and popped over to grab drinks — the timing worked out perfectly haha. You can also order by phone.

I visited at an in-between hour, neither lunch nor dinner, but there were quite a few other takeout customers besides me.

Both the owner and staff were kind, so even though it was just takeout, it left me in a good mood :)

Mixed sashimi (small) at ₩43,000: thick cuts and seasonal fish

What I ordered at Hoega: mixed sashimi (small) for ₩43,000 and mulhoe for ₩17,000. I'd been fishing that day and had a sudden urge for a daytime drink, so I packed this up in a hurry — and it was so satisfying...

No need to envy a restaurant with an ocean view!!

What I liked most was that the sashimi wasn't sliced thin just to make the portion look bigger! Pick up a piece and it's got real thickness — you actually get that satisfying chew!!

I heard the mixed sashimi changes with the season, including fish like milchi (Japanese scad), striped mullet, yellowtail, red sea bream, mackerel, herring, kkorangchi, and black porgy — so the mix could vary depending on when you visit. If you've been let down by sashimi platters that are mostly the usual flounder and rockfish while looking for sashimi takeout in Sokcho, this variety is a real plus!

Mulhoe at ₩17,000, with abalone and sea squirt

Hoega's Sokcho-style mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) is ₩17,000, and it's not just fish — there's abalone and sea squirt in there too. The broth comes packed separately in a bottle, with just the right amount of ice slush, so it was so refreshingly cold...

And the Sokcho mulhoe I ordered alongside it! At ₩17,000, the composition was better than I expected. For a ₩17,000 mulhoe to have this much seafood in it, I personally thought it was pretty good value! Abalone can sometimes have a fishy off-taste, but this one was truly fresh... and the sea squirt had a sweetness that paired perfectly with the sauce.

Especially on a hot summer day, packing up a cold Sokcho mulhoe to eat alongside sashimi is such a good combo! Eating sashimi non-stop can get a little much, but the tangy, cold mulhoe kept me reaching back for more in between haha.

Side dishes, sushi rice, and garlic sauce with sesame oil

The thick sashimi paired so well with the various side dishes, and there were plenty of them so it never got boring... Didn't manage to get a photo, but they also gave us sushi rice, so we could eat it sushi-style too.

What I liked best was the sesame oil mixed into the garlic sauce...! Mix that with the ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) and it's so good~! That detail made me think this place is the real deal.

Is Hoega worth it for sashimi takeout in Sokcho?

Thick-cut sashimi, a variety of seasonal fish, and a generously loaded Sokcho mulhoe — overall, great value for the price at this budget-friendly Sokcho sashimi takeout spot! If you're planning to grab sashimi takeout near Sokcho Jungang Market, I'd especially recommend it to anyone browsing the market who's looking for sashimi to bring back to eat at their hotel. If you want to wrap up your trip relaxing with sashimi back at your accommodation like I did, this is worth checking out as a Sokcho sashimi takeout spot :)
