At the tail end of summer, I caught a cold... and suddenly craved hot broth. But cooking ramyeon at home just felt wrong somehow (?)

So I went to Myeonsikdang, in front of Daegu Health College in Chilgok, Daegu, for crispy pork cutlet and hot pho!
Let me say this upfront: the spicy pho is no joke!

Where is Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae, and how long is the wait?
Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae is on the first floor of a shopping building at 18 Yeongsong-ro, Buk-gu, Daegu, right in front of Daegu Health College. The shopping building fills up with students from Daegu Health College and Daegu Science University starting around 11:30am, so if you visit around then, you'll need to write your name on a waiting list.

Back when the dujjonku (double crispy cookie) dessert trend was big, they used to sell it here for 4,900 won, but now the sign for it has been replaced with waiting seats.

If you sign up for Naver alerts and save the place, you can get a potato croquette or karaage chicken, and if you leave an Instagram review, you're entered into a weekly Monday draw to win a free set meal voucher via DM.
Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae menu and prices
- Handmade pork loin katsu 10.5
- Spicy shabu pho 9.5
- Sanuki udon 7.9

Once lunchtime rolls around, the place fills right up. Since the semester just started, there were a lot of student customers! While waiting, I sipped on warm udon broth.

You grab your own napa cabbage kimchi, pickled radish, and water from the self-serve bar. I thought the food would take a while, but the Sanuki fish cake udon showed up in almost 3 minutes!

Sanuki fish cake udon, 7,900 won
Myeonsikdang's Sanuki fish cake udon has a bit of sweetness added from the fish cake, more than the plain udon broth at the self-serve bar.
Sprinkle some shichimi over the chewy udon noodles for a spicy, refreshing bite. If you visit with a friend, it's also good to each get your own cutlet and share one udon between you. (Honestly, the cutlet alone is pretty filling.)

How spicy is the spicy shabu pho?
Then my spicy shabu pho arrived! The menu description at Myeonsikdang said it was Yeolramyeon-level spicy, and after spooning up the broth, I can fully confirm that.
True to the name 'Myeonsikdang' (noodle restaurant), it seemed to have just about every noodle dish imaginable. From the summer-only chogye naengsoba (cold sesame-vinegar soba) to pho, udon, mazesoba, and ramen, they offer a wide range of noodle dishes at great value, so it's a good spot to visit with a friend without any arguments over what to order (?)
At first glance, the color doesn't look that spicy, right? I wondered if I should add the hoisin sauce or chili sauce served alongside, but... once I spooned up the broth myself, it really is a broth simmered fiery-hot, perfect for curing a hangover.

It was deliciously spicy, and I happily slurped up the soft pho noodles topped with meat, bean sprouts, and onion. It's plenty spicy even without dipping into the chili sauce! The portion of pho was seriously huge... my stomach was stuffed!

Handmade pork loin katsu and its five sauces
Last up, the pork cutlet! Since it was my first meal of the day, I worried a mini cutlet wouldn't be enough, so I went ahead and ordered the handmade pork loin katsu (10,500 won).

Regular cutlet sauce / spicy sauce / wasabi / Himalayan pink salt / cumin salt. Great sauces to dip your cutlet in however you like!
The pure white loin was coated in a crispy batter, packed with a nutty flavor that wasn't greasy at all.

My friend's top pick was the spicy cutlet sauce, while I liked the wasabi and pink salt combo. The regular cutlet sauce was tasty too.

A clean, light pairing for the cutlet, and the udon was great too with its fish cake bar.

Who is Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae best for?
The spicy shabu pho, which felt determined to cure even a hangover from two days prior, was delicious. The beef on top had no gamey smell at all, and since I really love bean sprouts, I was happy there were plenty of crunchy ones! I highly recommend the pho at Myeonsikdang!

And need I say more... the cutlet, Myeonsikdang's signature dish, was crispy through and through. No greasy smell at all, totally great! There are solo tables, and it's easy to visit with 2 or 4 people, so it's loved not just by Daegu Health College students but also faculty and nearby residents.
