A wood-fired grilled-fish spread in Siksadong

I found this place while looking for a good restaurant in Ilsan for a little one-on-one date with my dad! It is known as a great spot for family meals because you can have a proper Korean spread, from grilled mackerel and braised fish to all kinds of side dishes 😆 This is Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo Siksa Branch in Goyang, Gyeonggi!

There was plenty of space in both the underground parking garage and the lot behind the building, so parking was super easy 😃

The restaurant was spacious, so it seemed great for both families and large groups~ The huge fish-grilling wood-fired oven visible in the kitchen really caught my eye too 🤩

Self-bar sides and the restorative set for two

⬆️ The self-service bar had so many sides, including assorted seasoned vegetables, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), kimchi pancakes, and bibimbap ingredients 😍

🐟 Restorative set for two (including pot-cooked rice), ₩45,000! It is Hwagan-go's special restorative set, bringing together Korean sea eel, oil flounder, seasonal braised fish, Norwegian mackerel, and more in one spread. This set for two jumped right out at me while I was looking over the menu, so I ordered it!!

The basic side-dish spread

Every single side dish was so good 🤭 My dad tends to have trouble digesting things, so he usually does not eat miyeokguk (seaweed soup), but he kept having this one because the seaweed was so soft 😃👍👍 The soup itself was not overly strong, and it was nice to take spoonfuls of broth here and there while eating the grilled and braised fish :)

Finally, the mains arrived!!! Big pieces of grilled fish—eel, flounder, mackerel, and more—filled the center, with pot-cooked rice and a variety of sides laid out alongside them. What a delicious-looking spread just to look at ✨✨

The eel, my top pick

The eel was personally my top pick! Can you see how plump the flesh is? 🤩 Having such large, tender, juicy eel included in a set menu is incredible value, isn't it? 🥹 Dip it in teriyaki sauce and add wasabi—it is seriously heavenly.. 👍👍

The flounder was large too, with soft, moist flesh, and my dad loved it!!

The grilled mackerel had thick flesh, so there was plenty to eat, and it was so good alongside the side dishes ❤️

Braised mackerel that went perfectly with rice

The seasonal braised fish came as braised mackerel, and it was just perfect with rice!! The seasoning had soaked nicely into the fish, so I picked out the flesh and put it over rice with the well-cooked radish and sauce—it was really delicious 😆👏👏 It had a different charm from the grilled mackerel, so I could enjoy lots of variety without getting tired of it 🫶

Overall, I loved that there were so many kinds of food to enjoy at once, from braised mackerel and grilled fish to all the different sides. I especially loved being able to bring back unlimited sides from the self-service bar. It was a delicious, filling meal for a family outing ❤️ The next time I am craving a hearty meal in Ilsan, this is somewhere I want to visit again ㅠㅠㅠ🫶 If you are looking for a great grilled-fish restaurant in Ilsan or a good place to eat in Siksadong, I think it would be worth a visit :) I absolutely recommend it 👀 (seriously)
