Goyang bakery for mentaiko potato salt bread: Boulangerie Tan

In short

Boulangerie Tan, Hyundai Department Store KINTEX is a bakery in Goyang, Gyeonggi, inside the department store’s basement food hall. I took home mentaiko potato salt bread, vanilla cornet pie, carrot rapé chicken sandwich, and chocolate baguette to enjoy at home. Verdict: the generously filled salt bread and shatteringly crisp cornet pie were the standouts.

It’s a famous bakery around Unjeong, and I found out there’s one at Hyundai Department Store KINTEX too~

Head into the basement food hall and you’ll spot the Boulangerie Tan sign! It seemed like a great stop on a KINTEX food-and-café outing after grocery shopping, too.

Boulangerie Tan drinks and bakery menu

The drink menu is simple, with four coffee options: Americano, decaf, café latte, and vanilla latte. All of them can be switched to decaf, and there was a discount for bringing a tumbler! They say the coffee is made with Fritz Old Dog beans. Fritz beans are so famous and delicious that some people specifically look for cafés that use them.

And beyond the coffee beans, all of the bakery items are made with AOP-certified Lescure butter! The butter really can make such a difference to a bread’s flavor, you know. They also use naturally fermented levain and only dairy cream...! I was already so excited before even taking a bite.

From sweet desserts to five kinds of salt bread, baguettes, sandwiches, and ciabatta, there was such a wide selection. Everything looked soooo good—carefully baked with great butter and ingredients—that I spent ages trying to decide.

Food hall seating and a takeaway order

There were tables in the food hall where you could sit down and eat comfortably! I couldn’t photograph them because lots of people were dining there, but there were even more spacious seats further back. I ordered takeaway so I could enjoy everything leisurely at home!

Everything was individually and carefully packed in their lovely branded paper bag.

I brought home my favorite breads: chocolate baguette, carrot rapé chicken sandwich, vanilla cornet pie, and mentaiko potato salt bread!

The full, sweet-and-salty filling of mentaiko potato salt bread

The first thing I tried was the mentaiko potato salt bread. Its surface was dusted with savory mentaiko (seasoned pollock roe) and seaweed flakes, while the inside was packed with fluffy, mild potato mousse and mentaiko. The nutty and salty balance was just so good—sweet and salty, sweet and salty. The filling went all the way to the end, so every last bite was delicious.

Shatteringly crisp vanilla cornet pie

Then there was the cornet pie I’d been curious about! I chose the vanilla one. The vanilla cornet pie is shaped like rolled-up pastry, and when you take a big bite, it really breaks apart with that wonderful crisp crunch. It was filled right to the end with choux cream...? Custard cream? Either way, the refined sweetness made me gasp as soon as I bit into it.

Carrot rapé chicken sandwich for a meal

The signature carrot rapé chicken sandwich had plenty of bright, crunchy pickled carrot rapé, mild chicken breast, cheese, and fresh arugula tucked into salt bread. The texture was great, and it went so well with the sauce. It was perfect as a meal, too. You can choose either baguette or salt bread for the sandwich, and I went with salt bread.

Soft chocolate baguette

And another Boulangerie Tan signature: the chocolate baguette! Please do try this one... it was seriously delicious! I worried a baguette might be hard, but it wasn’t hard at all—it was wonderfully soft. Looking at the cross-section, you can see generous pieces of rich dark chocolate and nuts throughout. It wasn’t overly sweet; the subtle, refined sweetness worked so well with the nuttiness. With coffee, it has that dangerously addictive flavor that disappears in no time..b

Every bread I tried at this KINTEX café, Boulangerie Tan, was so delicious. They also sell cornet pies as gifts, which would make such a lovely present, and there was a brunch set discount from 11:00 to 14:00 plus a 3+1 salt bread promotion in progress 💖 Bread lovers, if you’re looking for a great bakery in Goyang, I recommend Boulangerie Tan at KINTEX!
