While frantically searching for a good lunch spot in Chodang-dong during a Gangneung trip, I found Moana Burger — a place famous for its Hawaiian-flavored interior and juicy patties. So many reviews raved about the combo of rich handmade burgers and spicy chili beans that I headed there without a second thought.

What's the exterior and vibe of Moana Burger like?

At the entrance, a bold red 'MOANA BURGER' sign catches your eye with its exotic feel. It's easy to spot from a distance, and the wide-open folding doors give the place such an airy, open feel that I felt refreshed the moment I walked in.

Inside, the dining room is decorated with black-and-white checkerboard tile, giving off a hip, stylish atmosphere.

What immediately grabbed my attention was a super gentle, adorable golden retriever mascot lying on the floor, napping away without a care.

He's very friendly, so while waiting for our order I got to boop his nose and play around with him — pure healing that wiped away all the fatigue of the trip.

What we ordered at Moana Burger

The best-seller menu was clearly signposted, so to sample the signatures across the board we ordered the classic Moana Burger, the double-patty Moana Double Burger set, and a side of chili beans.

There's also a big ₩2,000-off draft beer promotion when you order a burger — if I hadn't been driving, a cold beer alongside would've been perfect.

Everything came out neatly arranged on a tray, and the visuals alone made my mouth water. I wanted to grab my chopsticks right away, but I held off just long enough to snap a photo. The portions were more generous than expected — filling just to look at.

On top of the glossy, fluffy bun sat a cute character pick, adding a fun visual touch and a good excuse for photos.

The chili beans served alongside the burgers came piled with ground meat and cheese on a rich, spicy chili sauce, and the savory flavor exploded.

We ordered it to go with the burgers, and I'd have been sorry if we hadn't. Loaded with ground meat and savory cheese over a rich, spicy chili sauce, the umami flavor really exploded.
