Gangneung makguksu restaurant: mul vs pollock bibim at Gossi's

In short

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a house-made noodle restaurant standing right in front of Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. At a second-floor ocean-view window seat on a weekday lunch, the 36,000-won set for two brought mul-makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles in chilled broth) and pollock-sikhae bibim makguksu (+2,000 won) with boiled pork, plus a buckwheat cheese roll cutlet for 15,000 won. The set lets you pick between makguksu and sundubu kalguksu, and the cold broth sipped with the sea in view is what Gossi's does best.

With the weather finally turning cool, higher skies, and a craving to see the sea, I took off on a trip to Gangneung. Along the way I ate at a great restaurant I want to introduce here: Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch.

Where is Gossi's main branch? Right in front of Gangmun Beach

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch sits somewhere you can spot right away when you come to Gangmun Beach. I'd passed by it before, and this time I finally stopped in craving cold, refreshing makguksu (buckwheat noodles).

Walking in, the counter staff direct you upstairs to the 2nd floor. Before heading up, there's a corner selling all kinds of Gangneung specialty products. There's also a message from the founder — gave the place a real sense of craftsmanship, haha.

Up the stairs to the 2nd floor! On the way there's a notice about parking, worth sharing here, haha.

Second-floor ocean-view window seats on a weekday lunch

The moment you get up to the 2nd floor of Gossi's, the ocean view over Gangmun Beach hits you. It being lunchtime, the place was packed — but luckily a window seat opened up, so we got to sit with the great view, haha.

A place where you can enjoy a good meal while looking out at that wide, blue sea. Before ordering, the basic side dishes (yeolmu kimchi, radish pickle, kkakdugi) come out neatly, and they pair perfectly with makguksu.

What the 36,000-won set for two includes

At Gossi's, we ordered the 2-person set for ₩36,000 with mul-makguksu and pollock-jeotgal bibim (+₩2,000), plus a buckwheat cheese roll cutlet for ₩15,000. The menu is posted big on the wall, and this place makes the noodles fresh the moment you order — which got me even more excited. Each table has a kiosk, so ordering was easy.

From the signature cold broth of mul-makguksu / bibim makguksu, to the Gangneung specialty sundubu kalguksu with its soft, fluffy tofu, to gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and boiled pork as good side dishes — the menu was solidly stocked.

The 2-person set comes with 2 noodle dishes and boiled pork, and you can pick either makguksu or sundubu kalguksu for the noodle dish. Some substitutions may cost extra, haha.

How the self-serve bar works at Gossi's

If you run low on side dishes, just use the self-serve bar. When you order the boiled pork, ssamjang and salted shrimp aren't set on the table by default — you take as much as you want from the self-serve bar!

After a short wait, the dishes started coming out one by one. The portions were huge, the table filled up completely, and the whole spread looked so delicious, haha.

How does the mul-makguksu taste?

I was curious how the makguksu noodles would taste sitting in that cold broth at Gossi's.

A bowl of mul-makguksu in cold broth

After mixing it well, I scooped up a big bite with my chopsticks — the chewy texture was so refreshing, and the broth was sweet and delicious too. It's the kind of flavor that just blows the heat away.

Is the pollock-sikhae bibim makguksu too spicy?

Next up, the pollock-jeotgal bibim makguksu. I mixed it well so the seasoning coated everything, then topped it with the pollock jeotgal (fermented pollock) and dug in.

Not spicy at all, despite the color! Even someone who can't handle spice can enjoy this bibim makguksu. Adding a splash of the broth that comes with it makes it even tastier, haha.

The boiled pork that comes with the set

Next, the boiled pork that came with the 2-person set — thick slices, chewy yet clean-tasting, really good! I dipped it in ssamjang from the self-serve bar and topped it with the pollock and green onion kimchi that came alongside, which was a real treat, haha. It's also great piled on top of the bibim makguksu. Honestly the pork itself was just delicious, haha.

Buckwheat cheese roll cutlet for 15,000 won

Even though it's a main dish, I added the buckwheat cheese roll cutlet as a side. Inside the roll-shaped cutlet is a generous amount of cheese.

The cheese stretched out long, nutty and delicious. We ordered a variety of dishes and everything was so good that I'd love to come back again.

Gangneung is famous for makguksu, but honestly every time I visited I ended up eating other things first — now I think makguksu will be on my mind. Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, is a place where you can heal while looking out at a gorgeous sea and enjoy a delicious meal.
