I always check how clean a sashimi takeout shop is before anything else. But here, the fish tank caught my eye the moment I walked in — it was seriously spotless. I figured the sashimi quality had to be good, and after eating it, yep, no disappointment.

On this trip to Gangneung, we visited Minja Hoetjip, famous for sashimi takeout in Jumunjin Fish Market. Getting that premium-restaurant aged-sashimi feel at this price — the value was unbeatable!

Being inside Jumunjin Fish Market meant it was easy to swing by while browsing the market. Ordering by phone ahead of time meant we could pick up right away with zero wait. It also opens early, so it seemed like a lot of customers pick up takeout in the morning.
Inside Minja Hoetjip: fish tanks and prep in full view
Walking into Minja Hoetjip, the first thing you notice is the spotlessly maintained fish tank. There's also a seating area next to the shop, so you can eat right there instead of taking food out.

Watching the lively fish swimming around in the tank really boosted my expectations for freshness.

There's seating right next to the shop, so we could've eaten there instead of taking it away, and watching the owner prep the fish by hand made me trust the place even more.

Best of all, it's a second-generation family business, so apparently it has a lot of regulars even among Jumunjin's many sashimi restaurants — that gave me confidence :)
What comes on the small mixed sashimi platter for two?
Minja Hoetjip's small mixed sashimi platter comes with 4–5 kinds including flounder, rockfish and salmon. We ordered the small platter for two and added a hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl) as a takeout.

The mixed platter is made up of whatever seasonal fish came in that day, so it changes a little day to day.

Once we got back to our accommodation and opened the container, the sashimi was cut thick.

The moment a piece hit my mouth, it practically melted — that soft texture felt exactly like the aged sashimi you get at a high-end restaurant.

Even after some time passed, it stayed firm and springy instead of going mushy — it was almost surprising that this flavor was possible at this price.

Sauce, vegetables and seafood all came along too, so we could mix and match to taste — and it was perfect paired with a light, refreshing daily white wine for a relaxed evening.
How much fish is on the hoedeopbap add-on?
Minja Hoetjip's hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl) comes with the sashimi, vegetables, rice and seasoning sauce all packed separately. That way we could combine them fresh, to our own taste, right before eating.

Most sashimi restaurant rice bowls skimp on the fish and pile on vegetables instead, but Minja Hoetjip's hoedeopbap was genuinely loaded with sashimi — it caught me off guard.

Mixing the crunchy fresh vegetables with the sweet-and-tangy sauce, the whole bowl disappeared in no time.

Having tried both the mixed sashimi platter and the hoedeopbap from this Jumunjin sashimi takeout spot, it was plenty of food for two people to eat until full :)
Who should order sashimi takeout in Jumunjin?

Among Jumunjin's sashimi restaurants, this one is meticulous about everything from tank upkeep to prep to packing, so if you want to enjoy a plate of sashimi at your accommodation during a Gangneung trip, I'd recommend Minja Hoetjip. If you're taking out, call ahead — you can pick up with no wait, so keep that in mind :)
