Squid-ink bun burger at Sageunjin Beach terrace, Gangneung: Burger Bar

I saw a photo of a burger with a whole squid leg sticking out of it and knew I had to try it. A black bun made with squid ink, plus a fat squid leg inside — this burger restaurant is Gangneung to the core, visually and otherwise.

Here's my review of Burger Bar, where you can enjoy a Gangneung burger on a terrace with the sea spread out right in front of you.

Burger Bar basics: location, hours and parking in Gangneung

Burger Bar is a handmade burger restaurant at 609 Haean-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, right in front of Sageunjin Beach. Hours are Mon–Tue 11:00–19:00, Wed–Sun 10:00–21:00, and there's parking for about 5 cars in front of the restaurant.

It's right in front of Gangneung's Jumunjin-area beach, so the flow of a meal followed by a beach walk was great.

Best of all, this is the Gangneung burger restaurant that appeared on the TV show 6 Si Nae Gohyang, so I came in with high expectations :)

Inside Burger Bar and the sea-facing terrace seats

Burger Bar is laid out so the restaurant faces Sageunjin Beach head-on. You can see the ocean view from the indoor seats too, but on a nice day the terrace seats are clearly the popular pick.

We sat on the terrace, and with the sea spread out right in front of us and a cool autumn breeze on top of that, the atmosphere was seriously perfect. Even among Gangneung restaurants, a place where you can eat with a view like this is rare!

Jumunjin squid burger: a whole tentacle in a squid-ink bun

What catches your eye first at Burger Bar is definitely the Jumunjin squid burger. Between the black buns made with squid ink there's a generous stack of vegetables, patty, red cabbage, and coleslaw, and tucked in among all that is a whole, fat squid leg — what a sight!

Take a big bite and you first get the crispy texture of the fried squid leg, then the soft patty and crunchy vegetables all coming together at once.

It's a combination you can only get at a Gangneung burger restaurant like this one, so this was definitely a must-eat.

Daegwallyeong songgo mushroom burger with white wine mushroom sauce and lemon mustard

Since I usually love mushrooms, I picked the Daegwallyeong songgo mushroom burger, which also appeared on 6 Si Nae Gohyang. The songgo mushroom, a Daegwallyeong specialty, paired with a thick patty, and its aroma and texture were fantastic.

With white wine mushroom sauce and a lemon mustard dressing added on top, the flavor felt even deeper — I didn't expect to find this kind of depth in a Gangneung burger.

Both burgers were so generously filled that the burgers alone were enough to fill us up.

Fries cut and fried fresh from raw potatoes

You can't have a burger without fries! Burger Bar's fries are freshly fried from raw potatoes, so we got to enjoy them hot and crispy straight away.

They were nice and thick, moist inside, and tasty enough to eat one by one with no sauce at all. Popping fries one at a time while looking at the sea was one of those small, happy moments.
