Open-kitchen tonkatsu set for two in Amsa-dong, Seoul: Tonka

In short

Tonka is a Japanese tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant tucked into a side street in Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul. Seated right in front of the open kitchen, we ordered the signature tonkatsu for two, which brings both cuts: the loin rosukatsu was thick yet never dry, while the tenderloin hirekatsu melted in the mouth. Tonka is a place worth returning to whenever you crave tonkatsu that is crisp outside and juicy inside.

Thanks to the cozy, modern interior, it seemed perfect for a Gangdong date spot, a family meal with kids, or a get-together with friends. You can watch the cooking process live through the open front counter, which makes even the waiting time enjoyable.

What's on the menu at Tonka?

As a proper tonkatsu specialist with juicy cutlets, every dish here shows real care. It's true to the basics while using top-quality meat, so the quality really stands out.

  • Special Loin Katsu: crispy breading meets savory, clean-tasting loin
  • Sashimi Katsu: soft texture and rich flavor in one bite
  • Tonkatsu: the pick for those who want both loin and tenderloin at once

We ordered the signature tonkatsu for two, which lets you enjoy both tenderloin and loin together~!!

How did the loin rosukatsu taste?

Tonka's tonkatsu for two comes with loin katsu and tenderloin katsu served together on one plate. The moment it arrived, the golden-brown look and savory fried aroma had us gasping!

Crisp outside, juicy inside: Tonka's loin rosukatsu

Breading/texture: that satisfying crunch spreads deliciously! Even though the loin is thick, it's never dry — the texture is soft and tender to bite into, honestly a work of art.

Juice/flavor: juice is packed between every fiber of the meat, so the more you chew, the more the clean, savory flavor deepens.

Sauce pairing: it's tasty dipped lightly in the standard tonkatsu sauce, but with a bit of wasabi and salt, the meat's natural umami really explodes!

Is the tenderloin hirekatsu good for kids and older diners?

The ultimate in tenderness — the tenderloin katsu. Texture: holding pinkish juices, the tenderloin practically melts the moment it hits your mouth. I think even kids or elders with weaker teeth could enjoy this easily.

Flavor: no gamey smell at all, just pure savory richness — every bite drew an admiring sigh.

Side dishes: cabbage salad and soup

A well-composed set of sides & extras. The crisp cabbage salad served with Tonka's tonkatsu comes with a refreshing dressing that cuts through any greasiness. The neat soup, warm rice, and clean side dishes all came together nicely!
