Seomyeon galbitang with a photo-review hand cream: Gang Galbitang

Today I'm bringing you a story about eating alone in Seomyeon, Busan. I don't usually eat solo very often so it felt a little awkward, but the place I went to was Gang Galbitang, famous as a solo-dining spot in Seomyeon, Busan.

How to find Gang Galbitang: 5 minutes from Seomyeon Station Exit 11

Gang Galbitang isn't far from Seomyeon Station Exit 11, so it was easy to find. I went during an early dinner slot, and people kept streaming in right after me. I was glad I'd gotten there a bit early, haha.

As soon as I opened the door, a staff member greeted me brightly, and when I said I was eating alone, they kindly showed me to a seat right away, which put me at ease.

There were plenty of seats set up on both sides of the restaurant for solo diners. Thanks to that, I could sit down comfortably without feeling self-conscious.

The interior was done up in wood tones, giving it a clean yet cozy atmosphere. The tables were spaced generously too, so it never felt cramped.

Having small plates, napkins, sauce, and water already set out at the table was so convenient, haha.

Gang Galbitang's menu and how to order at the kiosk

Orders at Gang Galbitang go through a kiosk, but staff will happily take your order verbally if you're not comfortable with it.

Looking at the menu board, there was a wide range: basic galbitang, spicy galbitang, galbi gukbap, galbi guksu (short rib noodle soup), and arongsatae suyuk (boiled beef shank). For those who like a spicy kick, the spice level could be adjusted from 1 to 3!

There was also a meal kit available, good for takeout or gifting, so you can apparently boil it up at home too.

Worth checking the country-of-origin info too, haha!

What the galbitang with jungmyeon noodles tastes like

Since broth can splash, they served me an apron along with the soup even without me asking!

The side dishes came out neatly arranged — diced radish kimchi, chosuk-jam (Chinese artichoke pickle), peppers, garlic — perfect for cleansing the palate between spoonfuls of galbitang. There was also a self-serve bar on one side, so I could help myself to more banchan (side dishes) if I ran out.

I ordered the galbitang with jungmyeon (medium-thick wheat noodles) added, though honestly the basic portion was generous enough that I didn't need to. The piping hot galbitang came out not long after I ordered, and they gave me scissors and tongs to separate the bone from the meat. The noodles were so hot that I scooped some into a small plate and dipped them into broth that had cooled just enough to eat!

It was surprising how the meat just slid right off the moment I picked it up with the tongs 😊

The biggest piece of meat was still attached to the bone, but one snip of the scissors and it came off easily too. I was genuinely surprised by a rib the size of my palm, haha.

I usually try the broth first, and this clear, hot broth was really deep in flavor. The glass noodles had soaked up plenty of broth too, so scooping them up along with the meat was its own little delicacy.

Personally I prefer garlic dipped in ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) over the diced radish kimchi, haha. Eating it that way left me thoroughly full for one meal. My stomach had been a bit queasy after Chuseok (Korean thanksgiving), and this felt like it was settling things, so I kept reaching for more.

The slightly sweet soy sauce paired so well with the meat too — honestly, if I hadn't had plans afterward, I would have ordered soju on the spot, lol. Looking around, I noticed even the older folks nearby seemed to be trying to resist and ended up ordering some anyway.

When I walked in there were mostly younger customers, but as evening approached, older guests started coming in one by one too, and I thought — of course this place has a reputation. There were customers who looked like foreign visitors settling in naturally as well, so I could tell this place was known well beyond just the neighborhood. I overheard someone at the next table say

This is the only place I could think of.

which kind of said it all.

There were photo-review event signs placed around the restaurant, and I ended up getting a hand cream for leaving a receipt review, hehe.

Why Gang Galbitang works for solo diners in Seomyeon

I'd worried it might be awkward to eat alone, but between the kind service and the plenty of solo seating, I could comfortably take care of a meal by myself. With a clean interior, tidy plating, and the taste to back it all up, I left feeling good even though I'd come to eat alone.

For anyone like me who wants a hearty solo meal, I'd recommend Gang Galbitang, a solo-dining favorite in Seomyeon, Busan. Next time I'm in Seomyeon, I'll be stopping by again.
