Gachiul Korean restaurant after-work dinner for two with mackerel: Gim
In short
Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Bucheon Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant on the road up to Wonmisan in Gachiul, Bucheon. Straight after work, the writer and her husband ordered the Tteuranchae Bapsang set for two (13,000 won per person) plus grilled mackerel (16,000 won), then worked through the banchan self-bar, cheonggukjang and japchae refills, and stone-pot sungnyung. A weekday evening meant an easy seat before the peak rush, and one set per person plus a single shared dish is the best-value way to order.

It'd been a while — almost since the end of last year(?) — since I'd been back to my favorite Bucheon Korean restaurant in Gachiul, Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Bucheon Main Branch!! Straight after work I raced over to my most-loved Bucheon Korean set-meal spot~~

Getting to Gim Myeongju in Gachiul: parking and reservations
Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Bucheon Main Branch sits on the quiet approach road up Wonmisan, so coming here always feels a little like a trip out to some hidden gem in the countryside. Today's decision: grilled mackerel, you're the one!!!
There's a spacious self-owned parking lot in front of the restaurant, but I'd guess it fills right up on a nice weekend...(which is exactly why I always come on weekdays!!)
The waiting area is still there, unchanged, and inside there's a Catch Table kiosk, so reservations are possible too. If you're already on your way or coming solo, I'd think booking through the Catch Table app would work too.
It's a pretty spacious restaurant, and even on a weekday evening there were quite a few people in. As peak dinner time approached it filled up even more, so I was glad I'd come a bit early. Lots of families with kids, and being a well-known Bucheon Korean restaurant, plenty of people out with their parents too.

The best-value order for two: Tteuranchae Bapsang set plus grilled mackerel
The best-value way to enjoy Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang is to order one Tteuranchae Bapsang set (₩13,000 per person) per head, plus one shared dish sized for four. So for my husband and me, two Tteuranchae Bapsang sets plus grilled mackerel (₩16,000) was just right. I've tried nearly everything on the menu here and it's all good, so if you have a favorite or something you're really craving, just order that.

What's on the banchan self-bar at Gim Myeongju
The banchan (side dish) self-bar is the heart of the Tteuranchae Bapsang! Before our table was set, I scoped it out — the lineup hadn't changed much: various namul (seasoned vegetable dishes), kimchi, braised potatoes, and fried eggplant.

Stone-pot rice comes with the set as standard, and if that's not enough, there's a rice cooker right there for seconds — a total win for big eaters!!!

The table setting, and making sungnyung in the stone pot
Soon the Tteuranchae Bapsang and grilled mackerel arrived. Basic banchan, stone-pot rice, cheonggukjang, and grilled mackerel all got set down — the staff have their own order for placing everything, so just wait patiently.

To get warm sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) from the stone pot, scoop out the rice and pour in hot water — later, you get to enjoy the sungnyung.

Cheonggukjang is refillable too, so don't be stingy about it — dig into the tofu and chunky bits, and just ask staff for a refill. They'll bring you a freshly simmered pot.
The fried eggplant is what my chopsticks reached for first that day!! It's better warm, sure, but even cooled down it was crispy and honestly better than expected.

Grilled mackerel with fresh geotjeori kimchi, the rice-thief pairing
And then, the rice thief itself — grilled mackerel!! Neatly flake off a piece and lay it on your rice for pure bliss; the well-salted mackerel is an absolute rice thief.

Don't forget to keep dipping into the cheonggukjang along the way~~ The kimchi here is more of a fresh, lightly-dressed geotjeori-style kimchi, and it was especially good that day. Honestly good enough to eat on its own, piled straight on rice.

Japchae isn't on the self-bar: ask the staff for a refill
Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang's japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) isn't on the self-bar, so you have to ask staff for it. Once we'd finished our cheonggukjang, I asked for a refill and requested japchae at the same time — they brought out a fresh bowl.

Once we'd properly cleared the rice, it was time for sungnyung~~~ A spoonful of the warm scorched-rice tea washed away any fishy taste from the mackerel and warmed me right up — a different feeling from soup altogether.

Sungnyung paired with banchan is a solid combo too, so if you're someone who just slurps the sungnyung alone, I'd recommend trying it alongside the side dishes.

Banchan and cheonggukjang sold to take home
After cleaning our plates and paying, I noticed they also sell these delicious banchan and cheonggukjang to go. The sirae namul (dried radish green side dish) here is genuinely so good that if I hadn't had any banchan at home, I might have bought out their entire stock. Next time I'm craving a Korean set meal, I'm coming back to sweep up the banchan!!!
