Jeonju street-food restaurant for Hanok Village bench snacks: Munkkocchi
In short
Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is a street-food restaurant in Jeonju Hanok Village, Jeonbuk. I ordered mild cheese octopus skewers and teriyaki chicken skewers, plus spicy katsuobushi mungangjeong, and enjoyed them on a bench opposite the ginkgo tree. Verdict: a filling, fire-grilled snack stop while exploring the hanok streets.

A Jeonju trip simply isn’t complete without exploring the food in Jeonju Hanok Village. As you walk the tranquil hanok-lined streets after arriving in Jeonju, a rich, savory fire-grilled aroma wafts over from somewhere—and if you follow that delicious scent as though enchanted, you’ll arrive at the quintessential street-food spot, Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch!

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch: location and hours
It is near the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Hall, right beside a 600-year-old ginkgo tree.

When I arrived, the shop was quite large and tidy! I assumed it would be takeout only, but there is also a comfortable outdoor space where you can eat.

Ordering conveniently at the kiosk made choosing from the menu easy, too.

Choosing octopus skewers and mungangjeong
The menu has plenty of variety, including mungangjeong, chicken skewers, cheese octopus skewers, and katsuobushi octopus skewers. I thought it was such a thoughtful touch that every item can be ordered mild or spicy!

I have had chicken skewers many times, but it was my first time trying plump octopus skewers, so I was curious! Wanting to sample a good mix of flavors, I ordered mild teriyaki chicken skewers, mild cheese octopus skewers, and spicy katsuobushi mungangjeong.

As soon as the order went in, they began cooking it fresh. Watching them blast the grill with a torch to give everything that fire-grilled aroma meant the wait was not boring at all.
While waiting, I looked around the shop. There were character slushies in adorable, colorful dolphin-shaped cups, as well as refreshing sikhye (sweet rice punch) and beer slushies!

A cute octopus plush sat in one corner, and wet wipes were provided for cleaning your hands. You could really feel the owner’s thoughtful attention to detail.

Once the cooking was finished, I picked up the food, and the skewers were even more enormous in size and appearance than I expected! The nutty cheese and sweet-spicy sauce aromas were incredible—I wanted to eat them right away, haha.

Trying all three on a bench opposite the ginkgo tree
The outdoor tables at the shop are great, but Jeonju Hanok Village also has benches all along the streets for taking a break. We chose a bench opposite the peaceful 600-year-old ginkgo tree and decided to eat while enjoying the breeze.

Munkkocchi and mungangjeong use processed chicken skewers and dried octopus skewers certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and they say they insist on using nearly 100% natural mozzarella cheese.
Cheese octopus skewer (mild)
There was a truly generous amount of natural mozzarella on top! The plump, chewy octopus grilled golden over direct heat was so good with the sweet-salty sauce and nutty cheese. 🩶

Teriyaki chicken skewer (mild)
The classic chicken skewer at its finest! Golden and crisp outside yet tender within, it had a deep direct-fire aroma infused into the sweet teriyaki sauce—the perfect sweet-and-salty flavor that anyone would enjoy.

Katsuobushi mungangjeong (spicy)
The saying that the age of dakgangjeong (sweet crispy chicken) is over and the age of mungangjeong has arrived fits perfectly! Generous bonito flakes fluttered over the crisp yet chewy fried octopus.
The spicy house sauce pulled all the flavors together, and every bite filled my mouth with the umami and ocean scent of the bonito flakes. I simply could not put down my chopsticks.
Our meal plans changed because the portions were so generous
We had originally planned to go straight out for a meal after these snacks, but the skewers and mungangjeong were so plentiful and plump that we were completely full from this alone 😂 I was more than satisfied with both the flavor and the portions. If you are planning a trip to Jeonju, be sure to try the chewy, fire-grilled Munkkocchi Mungangjeong alongside the hanok scenery. One bite and you will immediately understand why it is a signature street food of Jeonju Hanok Village. 🩶
