Jeonju Hanok Village octopus snack introduction

On this trip to Jeonju with my family, we also tried some of the street food in Jeonju Hanok Village. As you wander through the little alleys, delicious smells drift everywhere~

There are so many famous foods, such as bibimbap and Jeonju Choco Pie, but I found there were also plenty of Jeonju Hanok Village snacks that are easy to carry around, or foods you can take back to your accommodation for a late-night bite.

While walking through the Hanok Village and looking for a late-night snack, we found Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch (문꼬치문강정 전주한옥마을점)! It was my first time trying octopus skewers and mungangjeong rather than takoyaki, and the octopus was plumper than I expected—just right for a late-night snack. 😊 The tender octopus was such a treat~~

For the octopus skewers, you can choose katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes), mala, or cheese; mungangjeong, fried bite-size octopus in a sweet-savory sauce, comes in katsuo or cheese. You can also get a half-and-half order. They sell chicken skewers, too.

The side menu includes refreshing house-made sikhye (sweet rice drink), slushy beer, and Sangha Farm ice cream. We ordered two katsuo octopus skewers and cheese mungangjeong.

The slushy machines were whirling away~ There were three flavors: mango, green apple, and strawberry! Just looking at those colorful shades made them seem wonderfully cool and sweet!

A cup of nostalgic slushy looked nice, but since it was nighttime, I passed! A lot of people were getting the Sangha Farm milk ice cream, too~

Good for takeout or a quick sit-down bite

As street food, Munkkocchi Mungangjeong is great to hold in one hand while sightseeing around the Hanok Village. But there are also tables and chairs right beside the shop, so you can sit down and eat comfortably for a while.

You end up walking more than expected while exploring Jeonju Hanok Village, so being able to sit down, rest, and have a snack is such a thoughtful touch! Especially if you are visiting with children or ordering several snacks to enjoy at a relaxed pace, it would be nice not only to take them away but also to enjoy them right at the seats beside the shop. 😁

Katsuo octopus skewers and cheese mungangjeong

How the cheese mungangjeong and katsuo octopus skewers tasted

Our katsuo octopus skewers + cheese mungangjeong came out quickly. The skewers are grilled octopus, while the mungangjeong is the fried version. It was great to try one octopus in two different styles.

Starting with the mungangjeong tucked under a cheese blanket~ They drape that cheese blanket over it right at the end, and it simply could not look anything but delicious.

Fried octopus mungangjeong topped with cheese

The octopus is fried in easy-to-eat bite-size pieces, then topped with mayonnaise and a salty teriyaki-style sauce, making it a snack-like dish. Add cheese on top, and that is an extra level of deliciousness~😁

That stretchy cheese~ On my first bite, the savory seasoning came through first, followed by the springy yet tender texture of the octopus.

Honestly, I thought fried octopus might be a little chewy, but the octopus was much more tender than expected!!!

Tender octopus mungangjeong

Next were the octopus skewers. As the name suggests, they are pieces of octopus threaded onto a skewer for an easy, convenient bite. I ordered the katsuo version, generously topped with katsuobushi, teriyaki sauce, and mayonnaise.

Turn the skewer over and you can see the octopus cut into easy-to-eat pieces. It tastes like takoyaki without the flour!!! Not overly salty, the katsuo octopus skewers are perfect as a snack or with drinks. ✨

Both the mungangjeong and the skewers had octopus that was plump and tender to chew, never tough or hard.

The salty, umami richness of katsuo paired beautifully with the clean flavor of the octopus. 👍
